CONTRA COSTA COLLEGE COURSE OUTLINE ESL 123 Listening/Speaking I 18 Weeks 4 Lecture Hours 4 Units Advisory: Appropriate score on ESL Placement Test Course Description: This course provides instruction in listening and speaking for highbeginning ESL students. Special attention is given to oral production (including pronunciation) and aural comprehension. Course Objectives: At the completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate comprehension of short conversations about basic, concrete topics in clearly articulated English. 2. Demonstrate understanding of simple questions, statements and requests. 3. Produce spoken language to communicate basic functions necessary for daily interactions. Course Content: 1. 40% 2. 50% 3. 10% Listening comprehension activities based on audiovisual materials, including vocabulary development exercises Speaking activities focusing on fluency and clarity (dialogs, role-plays, partner interviews, group discussions) Pronunciation exercises Methods of Instruction: 1. Guided activities incorporating audiovisual materials 2. Pair and small group work 3. Lecture Required Texts and Materials: 1. Textbooks: All Clear Intro! Instructor-prepared handouts Course Expectations: Students will work an average of eight hours a week on the following homework assignments: 1. Textbook assignments. 2. Listening assignments including watching/listening to audio/video materials in the Media Lab/College Skills Center. 3. Contact assignments in which students conduct interviews and surveys. Tests/quizzes – 40% Speaking assessment – 20% Homework – 20% Final exam – 20% Grading Policy: A letter grade will be assigned based on the following categories: 90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, below 60% = F.
