Integrated ELA
Course Description: This is an integrated English Language Acquisition (ELA) course for English
as a second language students placing into ESL 1-6 (based on CASAS ESL assessment scores).
The course is based on the Washington State Learning Standards, covering reading, writing,
listening and speaking with a goal to improve English language skills. Upon completion of ESL 6,
students may transition to ABE/GED courses. This course does not meet any degree
requirements.
Credits: non-credit
Prerequisites: CASAS ESL assessment

Reading
Standard: Read with Understanding





Determine the reading purpose.
Select reading strategies appropriate to the purpose.
Monitor comprehension and adjust reading strategies.
Analyze the information and reflect on its underlying meaning.
Integrate it with prior knowledge to address reading purpose.
Writing:
Standard: To convey ideas in writing
 Determine the purpose for communicating.
 Organize and present information to serve the purpose.
 Pay attention to conventions of English language usage, including grammar, spelling,
and sentence structure, to minimize barriers to reader’s comprehension.
 Seek feedback and revise to enhance the effectiveness of the communication.

Speaking
Standard: Speak so others can understand
 To speak so others can understand, Washington ELA students should:
 Determine the purpose for communicating.
 Organize and relay information to effectively serve the purpose, context, and listener.
 Pay attention to conventions of oral English communication, including grammar, word
choice, register, pace, and gesture in order to minimize barriers to listener’s
comprehension.
 Use multiple strategies to monitor the effectiveness of the communication.
Listening
Standard: Listen actively





To listen actively, Washington ELA students should:
Attend to oral information.
Clarify purpose for listening and use listening strategies appropriate to that purpose.
Monitor comprehension, adjusting strategies to overcome barriers to comprehension.
Integrate information from listening with prior knowledge to address the listening
purpose.

W Day: W Day, the final day to officially withdraw from a course, is the Thursday of the seventh week
(Thursday of the fourth week for summer quarter). Students who do not withdraw by that date will
receive the grades they have earned, regardless of whether they are attending the course or completing

the work. Students who are considering withdrawal are strongly advised to consult with the instructor,
advisor and financial aid prior to withdrawing. The only withdrawals allowed after W Day are complete
withdrawals from all courses.
