WHAT IS IESUS?
Briefly, IESUS was established in the Graduate School in 1981 to encourage multi-ethnic, and ethnic-specific
multi-disciplinary research on problems or issues pertaining to members of ethnic minority groups, particularly
those living in the Pacific Northwest. Its thrust is toward generating significant scholarly publications and other
scholarly activity.
IESUS aspires to generate scholarly input about ethnic studies by creating new knowledge and by stimulating
and supporting the scholarly activities of relevant faculty (i.e., particularly junior faculty). Our support for
current research and scholarship could take the form of paying for one month of faculty salary and/or for the
support services during (1) the completion of manuscripts, or (2) assisting in the completion of an on-going
research project. The primary goals of the IESUS are as follows:
1)
2)
To support research and scholarly activities of faculty members, especially less senior ones.
To support the preparation of grant proposals for external funding by relevant faculty relative to the
goals of the Institute.
The assumption in setting forth the above goals is that the Institute should build for the future by supporting
present research productivity to develop our national visibility to the point where we can more readily gain
research grants.
Application Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be evaluated by the IESUS Steering Committee. The committee will consider the merit of
each application with respect to IESUS as follows:
1)
relevance of the research to the areas of concern of the Institute;
2)
soundness of the conceptual framework;
3)
the scholarly soundness of the methodology;
4)
the practicality of the methodology;
5)
the likelihood that the faculty member will successfully complete the project in time;
6)
the expected scholarly quality of the project;
7)
the significance of the project to the scholarly community;
8)
the significance of the project to the general community;
9)
the significance of the project in the career of the faculty member; and
10)
an overall rating of the proposal.
11)
In the case of applications for released time to prepare a grant proposal, all of the above ratings will be
used, as well as the likelihood of being funded.
12)
In the case of applications to work on scholarly publications, all of the above ratings will be used, as
well as the likelihood of being published.

GENERAL INFORMATION
1.
Only voting members of the faculty (see University Handbook, Vol. II, Sec. 21-32 at
http://weber.u.washington.edu/~fachome/handbook/Volume2.html), plus those with research
appointments of equivalent ranks, are eligible to apply. The applicant must be eligible to serve as a
principal investigator on proposals to outside agencies for grants or contracts.
2.
Proposals are accepted twice a year: April 15 and November 15. Decisions will be made within six
weeks of submission. The following decisions are possible: (i). yes or no, with no additional changes
requested; or (ii). you will be asked for proposal changes and resubmission.
3.
Faculty summer salary awards are limited to one month's salary and will not be made if the faculty
member accepts salary from any source for more than one additional summer month. Faculty may not
request salary for periods when they will be on sabbatical leave.
Note: For scheduling purposes, it is best if requests for summer funding are submitted for the preceding
November deadline.
4.
The Institute will not support indirect costs, secretarial salaries, or journal page charges. Photocopying,
keypunching, and travel expenses have low priority and are seldom supported.
5.
Applicants who have received a previous grant from IESUS are not eligible to reapply. Additionally,
applicants who receive funding from other intramural resources (e.g., Royalty Research Fund) will not
be eligible to receive funding from IESUS for the same project.
6.
Please keep in mind that IESUS has a very small budget. Our typical awards in recent years have been in
the range of $5,000-$7,500.

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
Investigators who receive support from IESUS are required to report on their use of the funds.
Reports will be requested annually and will cover activities for the period from April 1 through
March 31 each year, unless otherwise indicated. A report previously written on this research for
other funding agencies may not be substituted for this report. Do not attach reprints, papers, etc.
GUIDELINES FOR REPORTING
1. Major Research Accomplishments
Describe major research accomplishments during this reporting period that resulted from
research or other activities supported in whole or in part by Institute funds. Explain how and
why the accomplishments are important and to whom or on what they have had an effect-i.e., define the research arena and measure the accomplishments within it. Explain how
Institute support contributed to each accomplishment, e.g., pilot studies, instrumentation,
interim support, development of research skills.
2. Attraction of Other Funds
a. If the activity funded by this Institute grant evolved into a proposal(s) to another agency
during this or any previous reporting period, please list the title(s) of your proposal(s), the
agency to which it has been submitted, and the amount and period of requested support.
b. If any of the resulting proposal(s) have received approval and/or funding, please provide
the following information:
 Title of proposal
 Funding agency
 Grant or contract identifying number (not UW budget number)
 Amount of award for current budgeted period
 Total amount of support for all years approved
 Total number of years of approved support
3. Publications
Please include a list of all publications, with publication dates falling within this reporting
period, resulting from research supported by this grant during this or any previous reporting
period. How many of these publications acknowledge Institute support? Please include a list
of manuscripts submitted for publication, including the dates of submission and the
publication or publisher to which it was submitted. If a manuscript is still in preparation,
please indicate its expected date of completion, and please let us know when and to whom it
is finally submitted.
