Briefly, IESUS was established in the Graduate School in 1981 to encourage multi-ethnic, and ethnic-specific multi-disciplinary research on problems or issues pertaining to members of ethnic minority groups, particularly those living in the Pacific Northwest. Its thrust is toward generating significant scholarly publications and other scholarly activity. IESUS aspires to generate scholarly input about ethnic studies by creating new knowledge and by stimulating and supporting the scholarly activities of relevant faculty (i.e., particularly junior faculty). Our support for current research and scholarship could take the form of paying for one month of faculty salary and/or for the support services during (1) the completion of manuscripts, or (2) assisting in the completion of an on-going research project. The primary goals of the IESUS are as follows: 1) 2) To support research and scholarly activities of faculty members, especially less senior ones. To support the preparation of grant proposals for external funding by relevant faculty relative to the goals of the Institute. The assumption in setting forth the above goals is that the Institute should build for the future by supporting present research productivity to develop our national visibility to the point where we can more readily gain research grants. Application Evaluation Criteria Applications will be evaluated by the IESUS Steering Committee. The committee will consider the merit of each application with respect to IESUS as follows: 1) relevance of the research to the areas of concern of the Institute; 2) soundness of the conceptual framework; 3) the scholarly soundness of the methodology; 4) the practicality of the methodology; 5) the likelihood that the faculty member will successfully complete the project in time; 6) the expected scholarly quality of the project; 7) the significance of the project to the scholarly community; 8) the significance of the project to the general community; 9) the significance of the project in the career of the faculty member; and 10) an overall rating of the proposal. 11) In the case of applications for released time to prepare a grant proposal, all of the above ratings will be used, as well as the likelihood of being funded. 12) In the case of applications to work on scholarly publications, all of the above ratings will be used, as well as the likelihood of being published. 1 Institute for Ethnic Studies in the United States University of Washington GENERAL INFORMATION 1.
