Course Description
The main objective of the course is to provide students with the framework for understanding
the main concepts of macromolecule structure: primary, secondary and tertiary structure of DNA
and RNA macromolecules, DNA replication in molecular level. Part of the course focuses on
transcription in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, the structure of chromatin, the ripening of RNA
molecular, RNA splicing, the importance of introns and egzons. The course gives knowledge in
biosynthesis of proteins in prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
The course also deals with the main methods of investigation: polymerase chain reaction
(principle, the use in fundamental investigations), DNA sequencing.
The course also aims at training abilities of experimental work. Much attention is paid to
learning to perform the main methods in molecular biology: DNA isolation, electrophoresis of
nucleic acids, polymerase chain reaction, restriction of lambda phage DNA.
