Dear Mr. Schmitt,
Dog fighting is a vicious, cruel activity and is prevalent in North Carolina. Not only are dogs bred and
trained to fight to the death, but docile household pets are being stolen from people’s backyards to use
as “bait” dogs to train the fighting dogs. I don’t know if you have a dog, but imagine your pet being
constrained, attacked, mutilated and violently killed.
Michael Vick is the most notorious animal abuser this country has ever seen, torturing and killing his
own dogs. This is not a person who was mean to his dogs. He was cruel and sadistic, as documented
again and again in FBI investigations and court documents. Inviting him to keynote your Evening of
Champions is sending a message to all the dog fighters out there that what they are doing is not so bad.
Even Michael Vick can find fame and fortune and be welcomed by the community for his “inspirational”
message.
We are big believers in second chances and rehabilitation. Michael Vick has a right to earn a living,
serve the community and change his life. Maybe there is even a place for him to tell his story, but he
certainly does not belong among champions in our community.
We work with over 30 local animal rescue organizations that are part of our AniMall Rescue Network.
These dedicated people work tirelessly to rescue and rehabilitate animals that have been abused and
abandoned. They are Champions! Inviting Michael Vick to speak is an affront to the work these caring,
selfless people do every day.
On behalf of the people who are working to save animals and end dog fighting, we respectfully request
that you rescind your invitation to Michael Vick and invite someone who is truly a champion. There are
so many deserving, inspirational athletes to choose from.
You said that the sports committee understood that Michael Vick was controversial. Please understand
that there is nothing controversial about cruelty. It is simply unacceptable.
Sincerely,
Jeremiah Adams
