PROGRAM SPONSORED ACTIVITIES Annual Cardiovascular Scientific Day - June 16, 1994 The Annual Scientific Day is organized to bring together faculty from across the University of Toronto. It is run jointly with the CCR Retreat. The aim is to provide an update in the frontiers of cardiovascular science and each symposium focuses on either clinical or basic science research. All attendees are encouraged to actively participate to promote cross-fertilization of ideas and research direction. This year's workshop was held at the Inn on the Park where there were over 230 registrants. The meeting featured Dr. Murray Esler, Professor of Medicine, Monash University, Baker Medical Research Institute, Melbourne, Australia, as the keynote speaker who spoke on Clinical Testing of Sympathetic Nervous System Function: Out of the Dark Ages. The central symposium revolved around Women and Cardiovascular Disease. Simultaneous sessions included Ischemia-Reperfusion, Molecular Mechanisms in Heart Failure, Challenges and Insights of Clinical Trials, Myocardial Function and Survival as well as topics in Nursing and Perfusion. 22 abstracts were submitted for the poster session. This session allows students to present their research work to a broader based group. Again this year, Mosby generously supplied textbooks as awards for the top 3 posters. The poster session winners were Jun Su, Cathy Carlyle, and Roberto Diaz. Dr. Nadine Clausell was presented with a certificate from the Program. She completed her PhD under the supervision of Dr. M. Rabinovitch and was the first student to complete the Program. Nadine's thesis was entitled "Increased fibronectin regulated by cytokines is associated with development of a coronary arteriopathy post cardiac transplantation". A complimentary lunch facilitated faculty/student exchange and the meeting was evaluated at 6 CME credits. With industry and The Centre for Cardiovascular Research support, registration fees were again waived to allow all interested to attend. This year's Scientific Day attracted the largest registration ever from across the healthcare disciplines. Response to questions circulated to attendees indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the location, scientific content, and speakers; many of whom were program faculty. The central symposium addressed a timely gender issue (Women & Heart Disease) and included presentations on career development in the field of cardiovascular, as well as healthcare issues relating to women and the development of cardiovascular disease such as symptoms and diagnosis; risk of pregnancy, gender related outcomes of cardiac surgery and abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery. Attendees also heard firsthand about the new Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario initiatives in this area. This meeting has become the highlight of our academic year! Heartline Heartline is the Program's newsletter which runs 8-12 pages in length. It contains various sections entitled University Update, Hospital Update, Industry Update (where the latest in information of interest to the cardiovascular community is presented), feature articles on current state-of-the-art research in clinical interventions, historical vignettes, news from the collaborating departments, meeting dates, grant and abstract deadlines, and a listing of the program faculty. Due to budgetary constraints, 2 issues were produced this year. Attempts will be taken to raise funding to produce 4 issues per year, which would be facilitated if one major sponsor could be found. One industry sponsor had commited for the year but, due to restructuring within the company, was forced to withdraw at the last minute. Currently, funding is raised on a per issue basis. Inside the Heart Lecture Series This lecture series covers current state-of-the-art research topics throughout the year and is presented by Program faculty. These seminars are advertised in the Faculty of Medicine's Research Events as well as being mailed to all faculty and students and notices posted around campus. Industry Sponsored Seminars In addition to the weekly Cardiovascular Seminars, industry is invited to sponsor a seminar. A feature topic is discussed where national and international guest speakers are invited. On February 4 1994, Dr. Ron Smith, Associate Director, Cardiovascular Sciences, Dupont Merck, USA, spoke on the "Pathophysiological Role of Angiotensin II in Cardiac Tissue". ADVERTISING MATERIAL The Program has created a poster that has been circulated across campus. Other material that gives the Program exposure is the Program brochure, Annual Scientific Day pamphlet, and Industry sponsored seminars. PROGRAM FACULTY The faculty are divided into 3 categories (Full, Associate, and Affiliate) depending on their SGS status. Affiliate members participate in graduate training but do not, as yet, have SGS status. FULL: ASSOCIATE: AFFILIATE: U. Ackermann, C.E. Bayliss, D. Bradley, J. Edelson, J.S. Floras, C. Forster, A.I. We now have 3 Master's and 5 PhD trainees; which is an 80% increase from the 1991-1993 academic year (The excellence of each of our trainees is reflected in the student achievements section.); total faculty increased from 44 to 49; the Department of Clinical Biochemistry was recruited; and the number of graduate courses available to our students went from 9 to 12. In collaboration with The Centre for Cardiovascular Research, we had our most successful Scientific Day with over 230 attendees and 6 CME credits issued. The Program's profile is beginning to be recognized across campus. This was reflected in the Director being asked by Professor J. Hellebust, Associate Dean, Division IV, to participate in the Neurosciences Program review. Also, on the recommendation of the Provost, Dr. Wittnich met with Dr. John Frank, Provostial Advisor on Population Health to lend advice on starting a collaborative program at the University. The goals for the past year, which included establishing semi-permanent administrative offices, recruiting appropriate faculty and students, organizing and hosting the Annual Workshop, and publishing the newsletter "Heartline", were all successfully met. The opening of a satellite office at The Toronto Hospital permitted the Program to share its office staff. The Program Executive worked hard and dealt with numerous issues including creation of a certificate of completion issued to convocating students, student recruitment, implementation of an annual student assessment form, and renewal of faculty membership levels -- to name a few. We also welcomed another participating department (Clinical Biochemistry). A student room was created for use by Program students and faculty. This room has desks, a reading area and will have journals and cardiovascular textbooks available in the near future. A bulletin board is also available for exchange of information. An external funding campaign was mounted. It was directed mostly at industry through the contacts of the Director but also privately with the help of Mr. Doug Gortner, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, School of Graduate Studies. Some interest from industry was illicited. The Director also initiated an annual meeting with each Program student to discuss their progress, suggestions for Program improvements, and to identify any potential areas of concern. This will occur on an annual basis (June/July). Student recruitment was expanded by display booths at the Faculty of Medicine, Student Scientific Day and the UofT Day. Brochures and posters were exhibited and the Director, Administrative Assistant, and a Program student were available to answer questions. For next year, we plan to continue these activities and below are the plans and priorities for 1994-95: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Encourage more faculty to enroll their best students in the Program - especially in departments less active at the moment. Promotion of cardiovascular sciences as a specialty area of graduate training: expand circulation of posters to interest more students, both at the University and outside academic, teaching and research institutions. Student funding (travel awards, studentships, etc.). Establish permanent base financial support. Facilitate the recruitment of interested faculty to participate in graduate training and support our affiliate members to move to status appointments with the School of Graduate Studies. Continue to improve upon existing Program activities.
