Annual Activity Report 1994-1995
It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program underwent its first 3
year review, and with the support of our faculty and students was resoundly endorsed for another 5 year term. I
would like to thank everyone that has been involved with the Program from the very beginning as well as our new
members on their continuing hard work and support.
The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program has had an extremely busy, productive, and successful year.
Many changes and improvements took place at the University of Toronto and the Program also looked at ways of
improving, whether it was with increased student enrolment or funding.
I look forward to the next 5 years and all that the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program can bring to the
students, the faculty, and the university community.

PROGRAM SPONSORED ACTIVITIES
Annual Cardiovascular Scientific Day - June 15, 1995
Because of the significant changes occurring in our healthcare system, it was decided that the annual University of
Toronto - Centre for Cardiovascular Research Scientific Day would feature "The Impact of Health Care Reform on
Research and Education in Cardiovascular Science". A number of outstanding speakers shared the platform. Dr.
Charles Hollenberg, CEO, Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, spoke on "An Overview of Health
Care Reform", Dr. Alan Hudson, President and CEO of The Toronto Hospital, shared his views on "Strategic
Options for the Teaching Hospitals" and Dean Arnie Aberman, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, spoke
on "Strategic Options for the University of Toronto". Two invited speakers, Dr. Eldon Smith, Dean, Faculty of
Medicine, University of Calgary, gave the Isadore Edward Smith Lecture on "The Impact of Health Care Reform on
Academic Medicine in Alberta" and Mr. Jeff Heseltine, Medical Director for Nordic Marion Merrell Dow Research,
spoke on “Industrial-Academic Relationships”. A lively question period ensued! A number of breakout sessions
were held in the morning and afternoon. Morning topics included sessions on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease
as well as Featured Research which covered a spectrum from genetics to cultured cardiomyocytes as potential future
treatment methods. Afternoon sessions included Nitric Oxide as the Molecule of the Decade and updates on New
Therapeutic Approaches. As well there was a Nursing and Perfusion session.
A complimentary lunch allowed for faculty and student interactions and during this time posters were also
presented. The following students were awarded prizes for their posters: lst Prize - J. Ikonomidis - "Ischemic" or
adenosine preconditioning of human ventricular cardiomyocytes is protein kinase C dependent. 2nd Prize - M.
Yang - Feasibility of RT-PCR to assess cardiac-specific gene expression in human myocardial biopsies: Sample
variability. 3rd Prize (tied) - D.C.H. Cheng - Cost analysis of early vs conventional extubation post coronary artery
bypass graft (CABG) surgery: A prospective randomized controlled study, and S.M. Torrance - Duration of
ischemia is not the primary predictor of post-ischemic functional recovery in immature hearts.
CME credits (6.5) were issued for this meeting continuing the high quality of the scientific content. My thanks to
industry for their continued financial support and generosity so essential to the success of this meeting.
Once again, the scientific day was a resounding success and continues to be the highlight of our academic year with
well over 250 participants.
Heartline
In keeping with these times of financial constraint, it was decided to produce the newsletter using desktop
publishing from our office. It was hoped that this format would allow for more cost effective and timely distribution
of announcements and news. With cooperation from the various departments it was hoped that the newsletter would
be produced on a quarterly basis. Should sponsorship become available a return to the original format would occur.
Inside the Heart Lecture Series
A number of interesting speakers contributed their time and knowledge to this lecture series and topics covered
included an overview on cardiac muscle metabolism and function from all aspects including physiology,
hemodynamic, and cellular to clinical. Additional emphasis was placed on a molecular biology approach and a
series of lectures were held providing insight into not only the basics but how this technology can be used in current
research on myocardial diseases.
Summer Activities
The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program, along with the Division of Cardiac Surgery, ran a very
successful summer program. With the many applicants (high school, undergraduate, and medical school students),
the Program was able to place 17 students with faculty. All of these students were funded by various agencies and,
for the first year, the Program was awarded 5 Life Science Awards from the Faculty of Medicine.
ADVERTISING MATERIAL
An updated brochure and poster were created and circulated to reflect the new participating departments. The poster
has a brighter look to encourage additional recruitment and promote dissemination of information to interested
faculty and students. In addition, the Program also has a home page at the University of Toronto internet site and it
is hoped that this will be expanded to include cross referencing with the participating departments and groups and
more information on Program faculty.
Other material that gives the Program exposure is the brochure, Scientific Day pamphlet, and industry sponsored
seminars.
PROGRAM FACULTY
The faculty are divided into 3 categories (Full, Associate, and Affiliate) depending on their SGS status. Affiliate
members participate in graduate training but do not, as yet, have SGS status.

DIRECTOR’S COMMENTS
With the review and renewal of the Program, the Executive Committee also confirmed their renewal for another
term. As well, the Director was renewed for an additional 5 year term.
This year, again, student enrolment increased (6 Master’s and 5 PhD trainees). It is clear that every year the number
of students enrolled in our program increases. However, the focus of this upcoming year will be to increase student
awareness of the Program and its potential benefits. Concern has been raised from some quarters regarding our
"low" student enrollment. It should be pointed out that it is the feeling of this Director that it is the quality of the
student and not the quantity that counts. With annual student meetings, consultations, and feedback, it is clear that
there is a high satisfaction rate with the current participating students. However, it is acknowledged that now that
the Program has received its 5 year endorsement this would be an appropriate time to increase recruitment of
appropriate candidates.
One way of encouraging students to enroll is through course MSC3060/3061 which continues to undergo
restructuring and improvement. There is now a selection of basic and clinical subject areas which will be covered in
a cyclical fashion across a 2 year period. This will allow students to select 2 of approximately 4 options, most
relevent to their area of study. As this particular course is meant to be current topics in research it is also important
that these be frontline subject areas relevent to the moment.
In order to better meet the needs of our students a reading/student room was created adjoining the Program office at
the FitzGerald Building. This has met with enthusiastic support from both faculty and students. With space at a
premium in the Medical Sciences Bldg., areas for small group get-togethers is becoming more and more difficult to
find. The reading/student room provides a milieu for interaction and discussion of common interests and goals
within the Program. A computer with internet access will eventually be available for common use.
With the cooperation and assistance of Marion Merrell Dow Canada, plans are progressing for setting up an internet
web site for both faculty and students. This will link us with other cardiovascular groups not only on campus but at
other centres and across the country/world. It is clear that the university is rapidly moving to electronic methods of
communication and with the cooperation of all faculty the Program will endeavour to provide notices, newsletters,
and correspondence via e-mail circulation as much as possible. This will also cut down on time and cost and
facilitate more rapid information sharing among the Program faculty and students.
A formal recognition of students completing the Program is done every year at the Annual Cardiovascular Scientific
Day. The graduates are recognized with a "Program Certificate" and a book entitled "Pioneers of Cardiology in
Canada 1920-1970". The donation of this book has been provided by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society on an
annual basis in recognition of our Program graduates.
The Medtronic Travel Award has become an ongoing annual competition and a number of meritorious
cardiovascular students have benefited from this fund. This has offset expenses of students attending national or
international meetings where their research work has been presented.
There has been significant effort on the part of the Director to ensure external and industry funding to cover the
operating expenses of the Program. This was the first year that the majority of Program expenses were covered thanks in large part to the generousity of Pfizer Canada - and it is hoped that with the continued support of our
corporate sponsors this will be assured in the future.
The W.G. Bigelow book prize was established for outstanding research done by a graduate student enrolled in the
Program. The inaugural awardee was Dr. John Ikonomidis who recently completed his PhD entitled
"Preconditioning Human Ventricular Cardiomyocytes" under the supervision of Dr. Richard Weisel from the
Department of Surgery and Institute of Medical Science. John did his research at the Centre for Cardiovascular
Research.
For the 1995-96 academic year, we plan to continue the above activities along with the plans and priorities listed
below:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Agressive student recruitment campaign.
Expanding and setting up the World Wide Web site.
Bridge funding for Program students.
Working toward a permanent financial base support.
Developing the 2 year curriculum for MSC3060/3061.
6.
Establish invited lectureships (4 per year).
