Learning Garden Update:
 Leadership Team attended soil sample testing meeting on Jan. 13.
 Email from Chris Hathaway regarding the soil sample testing.
Hi John,
I wanted to give you a quick update regarding the Humboldt Learning Garden project after a
meeting this morning that was a follow up to the soil testing the PPS and BES coordinated at the
site. A number of us met with Jenn Bildersee from BES and Chris Breemer and Neil Morton from
GeoEngineers - the firm that conducted the soil testing.
Essentially, Jenn requested the meeting to go over their results more thoroughly. In short, the
lead levels, while below the residential concentration levels - are close enough to the level to
warrant additional investigation - in particular, because the EPA model used to calculate the
residential concentration level (400 mg/kg) did not account for food consumption from the area.
While there are any number of potential alternatives to dealing with the issue - from scraping off
a foot of soil across the site (likely extremely expensive) ) to a more limited scraping, to utilizing
site design, etc. - the folks from GeoEngineers and BES suggested additional investigation and
information gathering as the best next step.
Specifically, Chris and Neil from GeoEngineers will speak with DEQ and EPA modelers to inquire
about running different numbers through the model, and Jenn will solicit DEQ's involvement in the
project. DEQ will likely take a closer look at the testing, the results, the uptake models, and he
basic use planned for the site. They will weigh in on their assessment of the risk. At that point, we
would propose a remedy to DEQ and look to them for approval. Essentially, the site would be
entered into their voluntary clean up program. Likely, you have some more direct experience.
Until these steps happen - the project and additional site design work is essentially on hold. We're
hoping that these initial conversation with DEQ can take place in the next couple of weeks.
Ideally, we'll know more by the next Oregon Solutions meeting on January 28.
Since you're a key partner, I wanted to keep you updated.

Angela Shephard will be the contact person for this outreach
We emailed Lois regarding Angela and other questions that were needing
answers.
We also need to gather a list of all the events that are coming up to her as well.
We will pass out the buttons when they come and pass them out on a special
Friday when parents come into the building for coffee chat, or during the Family
Night.
Hello Lois,
Hope all is well, as we sit here in our Site Council meeting, we are reviewing the
notes from last month, and we have a few questions and answers for you:
How are our welcome letters coming along?
Do you know when the buttons will be ready for us? How many will we receive?
Have you received the Day Care/Preschool provider approved list for our area?
Angela Shephard will be the contact person for Humboldt for you. Her email is:
angela.shephard@premgrp.com. Feel free to contact her regarding any
communications. She will let the Site Council know what is up.
Would you like us to write a Kindergarten Round Up Flyer or are you going to
complete that for us? Our Kindergarten Round up is February 24 at 9:00 am.

We need to make sure that we contact the various Day Cares in the area for
outreach
