InTheAirNet Announces
Transporting Home Experience Reliably (THER) System
for In-Flight Entertainment and Communication
Android-based modular architecture offers greater scalability and more options
IRVINE, Calif. (Dec. 12, 2011) – InTheAirNet today unveiled its Transporting
Home Experience Reliably (THER) system for providing in-flight entertainment and
communication to single-aisle, wide-body and large business aircraft.
Unlike competitors, who patch Android applications onto heavy, expensive
legacy systems, InTheAirNet uses a completely new distributed, redundant Androidbased network focused around connecting passenger smart devices, thereby eliminating
the server-based, head-end centric reliance of the past.
With its THER system, InTheAirNet has developed an unprecedented modular,
scalable system that allows customers to mix or match cabin class equipment, buy only
the features they want, add capabilities seamlessly later, choose any communications
pipe they wish today, or change it tomorrow.
“Android’s applications, like Apple's, have opened up a new world of choices for
personal enjoyment, as well as new smart device business applications on aircraft,” said
Michael Rogerson, chairman of InTheAirNet. “In addition, for the IFEC market, it has
allowed a whole new hardware architecture for cabin systems that also turns the
business model upside down in today's PED centric cabin. What this means for the
industry is an unprecedented reduction in cabin equipment prices.”
THER solves the cabin bandwidth issues present in all of today’s IFEC systems.
A USB connection does the heavy lifting by providing content and charging the
passenger’s PED, while the system wirelessly delivers Internet and email applications.
"Starting with a basic system that enriches the passenger PED experience,
airline customers can add the industry's best-selling passenger map, choose an
embedded seat display for business or economy, or perhaps just add audio for
passengers without PEDs,” said Rogerson. “With THER, it's possible to have all the
industry leading features, some, or just help the passenger's PED experience – it’s their
choice.”
Rogerson added that many of THER’s features are unique enough that the
company is protecting them through patent applications.
The complete THER system is in certification now, and the company will start
sales activities the first quarter of 2012. Each of the modules will receive parts
manufacturer approval (PMA) to facilitate supplemental type certificates (STCs) on
multiple aircraft.
