University of Central Missouri Harmon College of Business & Professional Studies Center for Business Internships Application for Graduate Credit Graduate students in the Harmon College of Business Administration (HCBPS), have multiple opportunities to earn elective academic credit for business internships. Currently, two courses are offered for elective credit. MGT 5390, Internship in Business, may be used as part of the college’s MBA program regardless of the concentration area, and CIS 5670, Internship in Computer Information Systems, may be used as part of the CIS concentration for the MBA, or as part of the MSIT degree program. Graduate-level internships will be approved only for those work experiences that are above entry level and meet the quality standards for awarding graduate credit. A graduate student who is seeking entry-level work experience in a particular area may enroll in an internship for undergraduate credit with the approval of the applicable graduate advisor. In addition, all graduate electives must be pre-approved by the student’s graduate advisor in the appropriate academic department. Generally, internships for graduate credit involve projects, rather than employment only. All approved business internships are for academic credit and the employer must compensate the student performing the internship. Graduate students who are interested in a graduate-level internship should first visit with their graduate advisor to determine if an internship would be a recommended part of their degree program. This discussion would not concern a specific internship, but would address how an internship could be used most effectively in the student’s academic program. If an appropriate internship would be acceptable for graduate credit, the student should then attempt to discover what internships are available. There are two primary sources for internships. Graduate advisors and other faculty members in the applicable academic department are the first source. As a general rule, most faculty members are in touch with managers and leaders in the business community, and may be aware of internship possibilities. Faculty recommendations also fare well with potential employers. The second source of internships is the HCBPS Center for Business Internships, located in Dockery, Suite 101. The primary purposes of this office are to determine the eligibility of undergraduate students for internships, to determine if proposed undergraduate (entry-level) internships are appropriate for students’ chosen academic discipline, and to contact businesses and organizations for possible internships. This office will assist graduate students with their search for graduate-level internships, but the primary responsibility for locating a suitable internship is assigned to the graduate student. Responsibility for determining the academic quality and applicability of graduate-level internships is retained by the graduate advisors and the academic departments. The graduate student must provide a job description from the business for review by the graduate advisor or department chair, and the director of the Center for Business Internships. The job description must contain sufficient detail to allow the graduate advisor to assess its suitability for graduate credit. When approved by the advisor (or the chair), the appropriate signature(s) should be entered on the application. This approval verifies that any work assigned by the graduate advisor will be graded by the graduate advisor. The Center for Business Internships will review the signatures and will then enroll the student. The student will pay for the academic credit as they would for any other academic course. For MBA students, the Center for Business Internships will also provide the student with a generic graduate-level syllabus, setting forth assignments, due dates, grading criteria etc. These reports should be turned in to the Internship Office. The graduate advisor is encouraged to supplement this syllabus by identifying course objectives, outcome 1 measurements, and when appropriate, other assignments or papers. Any work assigned by the student’s advisor will be graded by the advisor. Department of Computer and Office Information Systems will provide the syllabus for CIS 5670, as part of the MSIT degree program. The director of the Center for Business Internships will be available to visit the students.
