THE STANLEY MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE (USA) – GRANTS AND FELLOWSHIPS GENERAL INFORMATION The Stanley Medical Research Institute (SMRI) is a nonprofit organization that supports research on the causes and treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manicdepressive illness), both through work carried out in our own laboratories and through support of researchers worldwide who are working on these diseases. AREAS OF RESEARCH INCLUDES: · Animal and Human studies directly relevant to the identification of new compounds for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder · Neuropathology, using brain specimens from the Stanley brain collection or other collections · Neurovirology and neuroimmunology relevant to the causes and treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder It also supports, and is especially interested in researchers from other areas of medicine and biology (e.g., neurology, immunology, biochemistry) who wish to initiate new research projects on schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The Stanley Medical Research Institute has three web-based grant application programs: 1. TREATMENT TRIAL GRANT FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA AND BIPOLAR DISORDER 2. RESEARCH GRANT FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA AND BIPOLAR DISORDER 3. STANLEY POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS 1. TREATMENT TRIAL GRANT SCHIZOPHRENIA AND BIPOLAR DISORDER The purpose of this program is to facilitate the direct testing of new treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. BUDGET AND PERIOD Maximum $900,000 for a period of three years. 2. RESEARCH GRANT FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA AND BIPOLAR DISORDER Support for projects designed to investigate the etiology of severe mental illness and develop new targets for potential treatment interventions. BUDGET AND PERIOD The maximum award is $75,000 per year for two years. 3. STANLEY POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS Support for postdoctoral researchers studying severe mental illnesses. Applicants should be no more than 2 years past receipt of their doctoral degree. BUDGET AND PERIOD (for the fellowships) Each year, a single fellow will be chosen in a competitive application process and will receive up to $150,000 spread over two years (including indirect costs of up to 15 percent as part of the total grant budget).
