Dear Track & Field Parents, Since I do not get to formally speak to many of you until the season is fully underway, I wanted to give everyone a list of expectations for the girls participating on the 2009 Varsity Track & Field Team. If you have any questions concerning any of the following expectations, please do not hesitate to call me. I look forward to seeing you at the meets. 1) First and foremost this is a varsity sport, and thus athletes are held to high expectations in both practices and meets. Practices are fun but intense, with every practice carefully thought out so that every athlete is receiving the specific training she needs to better her performances. For the first few weeks of practice, the conditioning phase, practices may seem very similar for many athletes. These practices will become more and more event specific as we progress throughout the season. Everyone will be expected to do some sort of distance training, as this enables the athlete to get in better condition, along with their event specific training. We will also be lifting weights to help improve strength, along with doing sprint drills and plyometrics. 2) It is expected that athletes will be sore for the first few weeks of practice, but this soreness should decrease as the athlete gets into better shape. Athletes need to know the difference between being sore and being injured. If your athlete is sore, they need to stretch at home, take warm baths and massage the area. Athletes do not sit out of practices because of soreness, but practices may be modified if needed. This is up to the coach’s discretion. Please expect that your athlete will be sore, as they may be using muscles that have not been conditioned in this way for a while. An injury is a different matter, and it will be handled accordingly. 3) Practices are mandatory. If your child is going to miss a practice, a note from the parent needs to be given to the coach at least a day in advance. Please do not give a note to another athlete to give to the coach the day of the appointment, as your child will be expected to be in practice. You may call the coach at home if your child is going to miss practice. If your child is unexcused from a practice they will have to sit out for half of the next meet ( 2 events) for the first offense, and they will have to sit a whole meet for the second offense. A third offense will result in their dismissal from the team. 4) If your child becomes sick during the day, please have the nurse contact the coach at school. Your child is expected to be at practice unless the nurse sends her home. If your child does not feel well the coach may send the athlete home, or may give them a modified workout for the day. It is imperative that your child miss as few practices as possible, there is always something they can work on even if they are a little under the weather. Please do not have your child come home if they are not feeling well unless the coach has been contacted. 5) Attendance at all meets is mandatory, even if your child does not have an event for that particular meet. Every athlete will have events for home meets, but when the team attends invitationals, entrees are limited and thus there may be meets that not every athlete will have an event to compete in. This is a team sport, however, so everyone is expected to be at the meet to support each other. 6) Athletes must wait until the completion of meets, and the coach has debriefed the team, before they may leave with their parents. At this point parents may sign out their athlete, with the coach. Please do not approach the coach during the meet and ask to take your athlete home, this puts the coaching staff in an awkward position. Under certain circumstances athletes will be allowed to leave a meet early (ex: taking SAT’s the next day), but this needs to be discussed with the coach in advance of the meet. 7) Please pay careful attention to the times at which practices end, as they may vary. The times listed on the calendar are the times when practices begin and the times that athletes need to be picked up from practice. Your child will be released on time from practice, so please pick them up on time. Monday – Thursday, practices end at 5:15 pm, so please pick them up at this time. Friday practice times vary, so please check with the calendar for pick up times. They will be let out of practice 15 minutes before you arrive to pick them up, so they should be ready and waiting for you. 8) When the team has an away meet, the coaching staff will give the athletes an order of events, and an approximate time that we will be arriving back at the high school. Please make sure we can get in contact with you, as your athlete will be calling you when we leave the meet, to let you know our arrival time at Tully. Please be waiting in the parking lot when we return. Please do not make the coaches wait for an extended amount of time after we get back to the high school. You will be given enough time in advance to arrive at the high school, to pick up your athlete. 9) The Track and Field Team orders jackets every year, with the girl’s names on them. If you would like your daughter to purchase a jacket please send a check for $45.00 to Coach Michelle Rauber by March 20th, so the jackets can be ordered. The real cost of the jackets is $90.00, but the Cross Country/Track & Field Account pays for half of each athlete’s jacket. If you would like to see one of the jackets please swing by practice and Coach Rauber will have one available to show you. I look forward to another great season with your daughter(s). If you have any questions or concerns please contact me. I am not teaching this school year, so you can reach me at home, any time. Sincerely, Coach Michelle Rauber (607)749-5959 or 696-6213 mrauber@tully.k12.ny.us Outdoor Track & Field 2009 Expectations I have read the expectations for my daughter being a member on the girls Varsity Track Team and I agree to let my daughter participate on the team.
