Spring Runoff Preparedness
Your address has been identified as being on or near the Special Flood Hazard Area as delineated
by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Due to above average precipitation this winter there is the potential for higher than normal spring
runoff. Residents should be warned that no one can accurately predict the location and intensity
of flooding and that often high water levels occur without previous warning from stream gauging
stations.
If you do not already have flood insurance, you may want to visit the official Website of the
National Flood Insurance Program at www.floodsmart.gov. On the site you can learn how flood
insurance can protect your home as well as how to locate an insurance provider and choose the
appropriate coverage. Please note, there is a standard 30-day waiting period, from date of
purchase, before a new flood policy goes into effect.
You can also call 1-888-379-9531 for more information on flood insurance and protecting your
property.
The city of Aspen along with Pitkin County and other local government agencies will work
throughout the spring runoff season to provide residents and visitors with up-to-date information
on flooding. An emergency preparedness hotline has been created to provide additional
information on flood preparation at 970-429-1800. You can also visit the city of Aspen’s
stormwater page at http://www.aspenpitkin.com/Departments/Engineering/Stormwater/ for
access to tips, local flood insurance information, digital floodplain maps, as well as live USGS
gage data for the Roaring Fork River and Hunter Creek.
For more information on flooding in the city of Aspen, contact the Engineering Department, 970920-5080.
