English 11 Period 3 11:05-12:40 The Beginning… The English 11 class will work before they attend the assembly scheduled for period 2; shall have a big vocabulary review to further their application and knowledge for tomorrow’s vocabulary test, the second in the new series. We will also check the questions for the three selections of the Native American literature. Students should also be in the process of selecting the tribe that they will research and to make dolls to represent the results of the literature. Since the assembly is occurring during this period, we will not be able to complete the literary discussion but will before the test. Students will be divided into groups to report on some aspect of Native Americans and the media. From these discussions, they will begin formulating tops for research. They will continue the study of mechanics while and prepare for a quiz on capitalization later in the week. The remaining time will be spent discussing the last set of Native American selections while preparing to test on this. Week Beginning: Sept. 16-20, 2013 Tuesday/9-17 Classroom management and expectations always emphasized… Wednesday/9-18 LARGER CLASSES, but essays are being analyzed and writing practice increased… Vocabulary Power Plus for the New SAT will have its second unit of testing today. What is very efficient about this new vocabulary is that each lesson builds on the previous one which means students should review their last unit words while preparing for the scheduled test. As with the previous vocabulary, they must spell (below) correctly as well as use them in and out of context. They will also have a section on roots and prefixes, a critical part of determining the meanings of words. Prep for the next unit (#3) will begin today in order to complete vocab flash cards by Friday. The periods one and two classes will work to complate their vocabulary background, if needed. They will also review the remaining capitalization exercises and necessary rules that support their exercises. In addition, we will ensure the review of the Native American selections since there was a scheduled assembly earlier in the week. They will prepare for the test on the literature (continued from above) test on Thursday and the capitalization and spelling quizzes on Friday. These students are being encouraged to work extremely hard on pressing skills as the SOL for writing is approaching and as I correct their essays, I am speaking to specific skills. The Adv. Class is quite comfortable with their Native American studies, so I will permit them to begin writing their proposal for their enrichment research/projects. We shall also complete the work on capitalization and ready ourselves for testing on Thursday. I shall introduce the second set of mechanics which involve marks of punctuation… This class will take their test on the Native American selections after a review and discussion of possible creative reports/projects on this area of work. Once completed, I will ensure the preparation for tomorrow’s quiz on capitalization. We will also begin the next section of mechanics: the punctuation using commas, colons, and semicolons. Cordell-Robinson Subject English 11 English 11 Advanced English 11 Thursday/9-19 Two events that impact the school community will occur this week: --The SCA Assembly which will lessen class instructional time for a few minutes each period. --Back-to-school Night on Thursday… These students will take their test on the Native American selections with an emphasis on reading closely and analyzing information. We shall focus on noting particularly the implicational inferences that students should quickly pick up and apply throughout the reading of all of these selections. If any time remains, we shall discuss their potential creative research on Native American culture. Students will also discuss the vocabulary, the language mechanics, and the comprehension of each selection. This will be the learning that will be the focus as they advance in their reading and writing selections. Introduction to the next mechanics: the commas and other marks of punctuation. The quiz on capitalization will occur at the period’s beginning. Then we will continue with the next set of mechanics and an introduction to the explorers’ literature.
