LOCAL VHS SCHOLARSHIPS THE AVERA CREIGHTON HOSPITAL AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP DOES NOT REQUIRE AN APPLICATION, BUT DOES REQUIRE AN ACTIVITIES RESUME AND AN ESSAY ON WHY YOU ARE ENTERINGT THE HEALTH CARE FIELD ALL SCHOLARSHIP LISTED BELOW UTILIZE THE “LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP FORM” ONLY AMERICAN LEGION & AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP The Verdigre American Legion & Auxiliary sponsors a $300.00 scholarship for a VHS senior. The following areas are considered by their scholarship committee: grade point average, class rank, activities, offices held, college major, length of program of study, financial need, and career goals. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. ALLEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – separate app The family of Gerald and Louise Allen will award one $250.00 scholarship each year to a graduating VHS senior. Preference will be given to students who are employed at Alpine Village Retirement Center. The scholarship is payable to the school of the student's choice at the beginning of the second semester. A special application form, available from the VHS guidance counselor, is required. Selection will be made by a committee consisting of one member from each of the following families: Jane Holoch, Ann Hutchson, and Gerald Allen, Jr. Applications are due to the Allen family by April 15. ALPINE VILLAGE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP – separate app Alpine Village Retirement Center sponsors a $500.00 scholarship for a graduating VHS senior. The following criteria apply. 1. The student must be employed by Alpine Village or have a parent who is employed by Alpine Village. 2. Preference will be given to a student who intends to major in a medically related field. 3. Length of employment at Alpine Village will be considered. 4. The student's high school GPA will be considered. 5. The student must submit a brief essay outlining how he/she intends to use the scholarship. The special application form for this scholarship is available from the VHS guidance counselor or the Alpine Village administrator and is due to the VHS guidance counselor or the Alpine Village administrator by April 1. BLANCHE MERRITT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Blanche Merritt Memorial Scholarships are funded by a trust fund established in honor of Blanche Merritt. The fund is administered by Verdigre Public Schools. One or more scholarships of $100.00 are awarded to graduating VHS seniors, subject to availability of funds. The winners are selected by a committee of VHS faculty and administrators. The winners are selected on the basis of need, scholarship, and leadership. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. BOB KMENT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The members of the Verdigre Rescue Squad sponsor two $200.00 scholarships in memory of Bob Kment and in recognition of his pride in and his commitment to his community and its youth. Preference will be given to students whose parents are members of the Verdigre Fire and Rescue Squads. The scholarship will be paid upon presentation of proof of enrollment in second semester classes at the school of your choice. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. FATHER OBORNY SCHOLARSHIP The Verdigre Improvement Club sponsors a $150.00 scholarship in honor of Father Oborny to a VHS senior. The winner of this scholarship will be selected by a committee of the Improvement Club. Payment will be made upon proof of expenses related to a post-secondary program of study. The scholarship will be based primarily on academic and leadership qualities. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. EDWARD S. & ELDIVA M. (JEDLICKA) PAVLIK MUSICAL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is funded by a trust fund donated by Edward S. and Eldiva M. (Jedlicka) Pavlik. The scholarship agreement states that 90% of the annual earned interest in this fund is to be paid, annually, as a scholarship, to only one senior student, with the following qualifications: A. The student shall agree to continue formal music education as a major at a nationally accredited university or college for at least one year following student's graduation from high school. B. First choice shall go to the student who receives that year's John Philip Sousa music award, second choice shall go to the student who receives that year's National School Chorale Award. If neither of those two students is eligible, a committee consisting of Verdigre High School's band instructor, vocal instructor, and senior student counselor shall award the scholarship to a student on the basis of: 1. Musical ability 2. Contribution to the school's music program 3. Academic ability 4. Need C. If neither A nor B apply, the proceeds will go to either the high school band department of the high school choir department to be used if needed. If funds are not required, they will then be re-invested into the principal balance of the scholarship fund. Applications are due to the guidance counselor by April 1. GARY FREDERICK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The members of the Verdigre Fire Department sponsor two $200.00 scholarships in memory of Gary Frederick and in recognition of his pride in and his commitment to his community and its youth. Preference will be given to students whose parents are members of the Verdigre Fire and Rescue Squads. The scholarship will be paid upon proof of enrollment in the second semester at the school of your choice. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. HENGSTLER - ODINEAL SCHOLARSHIP Each year the Financial Aid Office of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln awards the Hengstler-Odineal Scholarship based on the following criteria: 1. Preference given to graduates of Verdigre, Creighton, and Plainview High Schools planning to attend UNL 2. Graduates of Knox & Pierce County High Schools 3. Financial need 4. High academics The total funds of this scholarship will be divided between renewals and new applicants each year. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. JACK'S QWIKSHOP CHESTERMAN BOTTLING CO. SCHOLARSHIP Jack's Qwikshop and the Chesterman Coca-Cola Bottling Company sponsor two $100.00 scholarships to graduating seniors. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. JEFFREY KRAFT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The family of Jeffrey Kraft will award 2 $250 scholarships each year to a graduating VHS senior. In honor of Jeffrey’s love of sports, preference will be given to students who have participated in one or more extra curricular sports activity all four years of high school. The scholarship will be paid upon presentation of proof of enrollment in second semester classes at the school of your choice. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1st. ADOLPH AND MARCELINE KRUSE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSLHIP The family of Marceline Marie (Boelter) Kruse is sponsoring an annual $500.00 scholarship for a VHS graduating senior in honor of Marce, her love for this community (her life-long home), and her years of dedicated volunteer service. Students must complete the Scholarship Application Form, describing their intent to pursue further education and related goals. Preference will be given to students whose activities demonstrate a commitment to Keeping America Beautiful (recycling/litter prevention) on a personal or community level. The recipient will be selected by the VHS Scholarship Committee; the funds will be administered by VHS to the school of the student’s choice upon proof of enrollment in the second semester. Application is due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. NADINE B. NELSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Interest from the Nadine B. Nelson Scholarship Fund shall be awarded annually to the VHS senior with the highest GPA who continues his/her education at a college of his/her choice. No scholarship available for 2015. PINNACLE BANK SCHOLARSHIP The Pinnacle Bank of Verdigre sponsor two $250.00 scholarships for a VHS senior enrolled in a post-secondary program of study. Scholastic standing and leadership activities are important considerations. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. VERDIGRE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP The Verdigre Alumni Association sponsors two scholarships for VHS seniors. Candidates must be enrolled in a two or a four year post-secondary program of study. The desire to continue the student's education is more important than grade point average. Financial need is considered. The scholarship winner will be selected by a committee of the Alumni Association in cooperation with the VHS counselor. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. VERDIGRE CREEK LONGBEARDS CHAPTER NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION SCHOLARSHIP – separate app The Verdigre Creek Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation sponsors a $250.00 scholarship for graduates of local schools. Involvement in outdoor activities is considered. A special application form is available from the VHS guidance counselor and available on the school website. The scholarship will be awarded at the Chapter’s spring banquet. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. VERDIGRE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP The Verdigre Education Association sponsors a $100.00 scholarship for a VHS senior majoring in education. The scholarship will be awarded upon completion of one semester at a post-secondary institution and the continuation of an education major. Payment will be made upon proof of enrollment for the second semester. Deadline for the submission of this information to the VEA is March 1st. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. The VEA may award more than one of these scholarships. VERDIGRE FFA SCHOLARSHIP The Verdigre FFA sponsors a $100.00 scholarship to a Verdigre High School senior. The recipient must be involved in FFA activities. Application forms and deadlines are available from the guidance counselor. The scholarship is awarded at the Local FFA Banquet. VERDIGRE FFA ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP The Verdigre FFA Alumni sponsors a $100.00 scholarship to a Verdigre High School senior. Preference is given to students enrolled in a two or four year Agrelated or voc tech post-secondary program of study. Financial need is considered. Application forms and deadlines are available from the guidance counselor. The scholarship is awarded at the Local FFA Banquet. VERDIGRE IMPROVEMENT CLUB SCHOLARSHIP The Verdigre Improvement Club offers a $150.00 scholarship to a graduating VHS senior. The winner of this scholarship will be selected by a committee of the Improvement Club. Payment will be made upon proof of expenses related to a postsecondary program of study. The winner of this scholarship will be determined primarily by need. Applications are due to the VHS guidance counselor by April 1. VERDIGRE MUSIC BOOSTERS SCHOLARSHIP The Verdigre School Music Boosters sponsor a $100 recognition award to a VHS senior who has been enrolled in band AND choir all four years at Verdigre High School. The music boosters may grant more than one of these awards. Applications are available from the VHS guidance counselor and are due by April 1. Award recipients will be announced at graduation and issued a check shortly thereafter. VERDIGRE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP The VHS National Honor Society may sponsor a $150.00 scholarship for a senior member of the National Honor Society, depending on the availability of funds. Candidates must be enrolled in a two or four year post-secondary program. The winner will be selected by the National Honor Society's faculty council, following the guidelines of the National Honor Society. Applications are due by April 1 to the VHS guidance counselor. More than one scholarship may be awarded. VERDIGRE SCHOOL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP – separate app 2 scholarships for $400 Student must rank in the top half of the class. Must be enrolled in further education. Proof of college expenses must be provided for payment. Also scholarship format is available on line at verdigreschoolfoundation.org Deadline before April 1st. ZCBJ LODGE #5 SCHOLARSHIP Verdigre's ZCBJ Lodge #5 sponsors a $50.00 scholarship to each graduating senior who is a member of the Lodge. Application should be made to the Lodge president by April 1.
