ELI 100 Oral Presentation Suggestions Speaking Tips Take a deep breath and remember not to speak too rapidly Make eye contact with the audience Do NOT read your visual aids (it’s very boring for the audience). You should practice your presentation enough that you don’t need to read. Practice your presentation in front of the mirror or with a friend Time yourself to make sure your are between 15-20 minutes Avoid saying “umm”, “like”, “ya know” and “uhh” Make sure to explain any difficult terms, concepts or ideas for the audience When you are finished – do NOT say, “That’s it!” Finish with a concluding statement that neatly sums up your presentation, then ask the audience if they have any questions Think of questions the audience will ask you and try to answer them before the presentation Don’t forget to SMILE ! What you have to do to complete this assignment is the following: o Prepare for the presentation o Prepare any visual aids o Give a presentation There is no writing required in this assignment. If you prefer, only one, two, or three members can be presenters in the presentation. The remaining members can be in charge of visual aids during the presentation, for example. How you divide the work during presentation is up to you. However, divide the work equally among your members in the entire process. What you present is up to you as long as it is related to your topic. But remember! The purpose of this assignment is that you provide your classmates with any useful information about the particular genre of writing so that they can learn something about the genre. Examples of what you can include in the presentation are: rules of the particular genre of writing, an example of the writing, etc. You should prepare any types of visual aids (OHP, Powerpoint, handout, etc.) If you want to use OHP, please notify me in advance. (I have to reserve OHP and bring it to the PC Lab before class.) If you want to use Powerpoint, make sure that you can open the document in the PC lab. You can visit various sources to prepare for the presentation: library, internet, expert of the particular genre of writing, etc.. The class will take place in PC lab when we have the oral presentation. The evaluation of this assignment will be based on the content you present, (e.g., Can the students benefit from the presentation? (i.e. is the information presented useful to the students?) It will not be based on the presentation skills. Each group will receive one grade, and all the members of the group will receive the same grade. ELI 100 Discussion on Oral Presentation 1.
