Title:
閱讀心得 Book Review:
After I read the beginning of Anne of Green Gables, I was deeply fascinated with it.
How imaginative and silly Anne was, just like I was in my childhood. The author, Lucy
Maud Montgomery, created such a natural character that I laughed and cried with
Anne throughout the entire book. Owing to its interesting plots, it is difficult to stop
reading when the pages run out.
Red-haired, fiery-spirited Anne was adopted by Matthew and Maxilla. They lived in
Green Gables on Prince Edward Island. Anne and Diana went to Avonlea school and
many interesting things happened there. Anne made many troubles afterwards. A
few years later, Anne went to Queen’s College and won the Avery prize. After Anne
arrived back at Green Gables, Matthew had some heart troubles and soon passed
away. She decided to take care of Marilla and keep Green Gables. Though she did not
continue her study, she believed she and Marilla would be happy together.
In my view, friendship played an important part in Anne’s life. She valued the
friendship between her and Diana. They knew at once that they would be good
friends. Thinking how lucky she was, Anne was very happy and grateful to have Diana
as her best friend, always on her side when she made troubles, though. She even
broke into uncontrolled sobs while thinking about living without Diana.
The purpose that Anne cared so much about the friendship was due to her
loneliness in her childhood. In the orphanage, she had to force herself to take care of
children much younger than her, but she was unloved having no friends. All that
made her tend to live in a world of imagination and talk to herself. Fortunately, her
life turned wonderful in Green Gables. Anne had more smiles and knew what exactly
a friendship was until she met Diana, showing her concern to Anne and let her feel
no longer lonely.
American writer Sarah Dessen once said, “Life is an awful, ugly place to not have a
best friend.” Sometimes we argued with friends for different reasons. However, it’s
important to realize that it’s regrettable to lose a friend who really understands you.
Keeping a friendship may take time and effort but it is always worth it!
Besides friendship, Anne spent much time worrying about her
appearance--especially her fiery hair. To dye her hair black, she bought a bottle of
hair dye from a stranger. Unfortunately, she was cheated, dyed it green, and had to
cut it short. Also, Anne’s diffidence made her eager to attract others’ praise, only to
screw things up. For instance, Anne had expected Mrs. Rachel’s visit to be wonderful,
yet it turned out to be a nightmare because of Anne’s rude reaction to Mrs. Rachel’s
comment on her looks. Eventually she blew it and ruined the gathering.
In my opinion, Anne’s vanity is related to her childhood experience as an orphan.
Being poor, Anne dreamed of being fashionable and having a better life to make up
for her lack of confidence. Even after she was adopted, Anne caused Matthew and
Marilla a lot of trouble because of her vanity. But she came to realize the importance
of accepting her appearance, and became confident. In her case, acceptance leads to
self-realization and spiritual growth.
My heart is filled with joy and satisfaction after I finished reading the book. Anne’s
colorful life and positive attitude inspire me to face the difficulties in my life, and I
believe I can overcome them just as Anne did!
