Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic excellence.
February 6, 2008
Dear Cathedral Parents,
We are approaching the 23rd of February, a very important date in for many of our Cathedral
students. This is the date of Shamrauction, our biggest money-raiser of the year, and one of the
basic needs for our call to diversity, enabling students of varying economic needs to attend
Cathedral. Without the income generated by the Shamrauction, many of our strong students
would not have the option of a Catholic school education.
If you are not able to attend this evening during these times of financial concerns, would you be
willing to be one of the parent volunteers for this evening. There are many tasks fulfilled by our
wonderful volunteers that allow this evening to be a big success. If you are able to do this,
please contact Mrs. Nicole Beasley at 968-7311 or a nbeasley@cathedral-irish.org.

Update on Archbishop Daniel Buechlein: Archbishop Daniel received his final diagnosis
concerning Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on Friday. He also had his first chemotherapy treatment
Friday. The very positive news is that there is not much more news than what we already knew.
The cancer is confined to where it was first discovered, the right shoulder area. It has not spread
elsewhere. This cancer is a very slow spreading type.
 The archbishop will have chemotherapy every two (2) weeks for about three (3) months. The
doctor predicts that side effects—other than continued fatigue—will be minimal.
2


Archbishop Daniel is doing well; he is in good spirits. Like all of us, he is hopeful and
grateful. He appreciates all of our prayers. He is offering his own prayers and sacrifices for
all of us and for the archdiocese.
Continue your prayers, especially the Novena for all of the Sick this week. The Novena will
end on Monday, February 11, World Day of Prayer for the Sick: the Feast of Our Lady of
Lourdes and the 150th anniversary of the miraculous apparitions and healings at the Shrine in
Lourdes, France. The noon Mass at our cathedral that day will conclude the Novena and be
for the intentions of all those who are seriously ill including Archbishop Buechlein. All are
invited.
- Msgr. Schaedel
General Announcements:
Course booklets and registration sheets for freshmen, sophomore, and junior students were
distributed on Tuesday February 5th. This began the process for registering for classes for next
year. Teachers will make recommendations in their subject area, and then students will bring the
course selection sheet home to discuss with you. Once you and your child have selected
tentative courses for next year, please sign the sheet so your child can return it to his/her
counselor. It is not until these signed sheets are returned to the counselor or college advisor that
they actually sit down and discuss the schedule with your student.
Letters of academic eligibility have been mailed to all juniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.6
or higher inviting them to apply for membership in the National Honor Society. Letters
have also been sent to all qualifying seniors not currently members. If you believe your student
qualifies and has not received a letter by Friday, February 8, please contact Mrs. Debbie Boyd or
Mrs. Allison Holman.
Please note that the next Math League Contest is on Wednesday, February 13th. The contest
will be held in the Cafeteria promptly at 6:55 a.m.
The Sophomore Class cordially invites all to the Valentine’s Day Dance on Friday, February
8th. The dance will be held in the cafeteria and will be from 8:00 – 11:00 p.m. Tickets are being
sold - $5 in advance; $7 at the door. See Mrs. Wheeler or Mr. Ernst for tickets.

I wish to share with you some of the problems that seem to be occurring in our front office
because of students and parents not following the school rules. If our front office personnel
make any requests dealing with these items, please be polite when dealing with them.
1. Failure to contact school when child needs to be dismissed for a legitimate appointment. The
rule is that you call ahead so that we can have a pass in your student’s hand and he/she is in
the office waiting for you when you arrive. It does not help when a parent calls the school as
he/she is driving up the hill. Merely telling your student does not help, either, but you could
send a note or call early in the morning.
3
2. Text messaging students in class to go to the front office. You are encouraging them to break
our rules, since they are not to have their cell phones out at all during the school day.
3. Allowing your student to call or text you in order to be released as ill without going to the
nurse or front office. If this happens, please call the front office immediately and let us
check your child first. We will call you if they are ill and need to go home.
4. It does not help anyone if a parent is rude to our office personnel when they are doing
something which contradicts school policy. Our front office is a very busy area. If our office
personnel asks questions (such as for a doctor’s note for an appointment) or mentions that
your child has missed many days, this is because we have asked them to keep parents aware
of this. If you are unhappy with the message, please see Mr. Greer or me, but do not vent to
our front office staff.
5. Parents delivering “things” students forgot and then must be delivered. If this is happening
frequently with one of your children, you are not helping train them when you enable this
behavior. If they forgot something, they can bring it tomorrow. If it is late and there is a
grade deduction on a project or homework, that is their responsibility. They will not learn to
organize better if you continue to “save” them.
6. Parents not wanting to sign in. We are responsible for 1,283 students and must know who is
in the building at all times. If you are unwilling to sign in, please do not come in the
building. Just as your child deserves to be safe from outsiders, so do 1,282 others.
7. Parents not being truthful about the reason student is absent. For our office personnel, when
it sometimes becomes apparent that a parent told an untruth about their child’s absence, this
is most disconcerting. We work diligently to help your children know how to handle
situations while remaining honest. We do expect that parents will model the same behavior.
8. Juniors and Seniors planning a college visit, but not obtaining the proper paperwork from
their college advisor. We ask for this paperwork so that all of your teachers know you will
be missing that day and so you have your assignments and can come back to school prepared
when you return. Merely calling in and saying, “Joe was on a college visit,” or sending a
similar note, will not count as a college visit. The student must do the necessary paperwork
before he/she may use this privilege.

For parents of freshmen - Freshmen Developmental Asset Meeting:
On Tuesday, February 12th, all freshmen parents and other interested parents are invited to the
Commons at 7:00 PM for an evening to learn more about how your child is developing as he/she
moves from freshman year into sophomore year. If you missed the first semester presentation on
developing assets, that is fine. We will catch you up to speed.
 The focus of this meeting is to learn the signs and some prevention tips to help your child
cope with issues of alcohol and drugs as well as issues with family and friends. These can
become very large issues for some youth. We know that 50 percent of teens at age 15 begin
4

to experiment with more issues than at any other time. We know that the earlier the onset of
experimentation the greater the chance of life long problems.
Several speakers will develop a perspective for you, the parent. Help your child by spending
a few minutes on February 12th. They may be the best few minutes you can spend.

You might want to give a card or a note to our Cafeteria staff who provide a good lunch for
your children each day. They are often “unsung heroes,” and can feel taken for granted much
of the time. A card or a note would be wonderful. The Director of the Cafeteria is Marty Dugan.
“RETURN TO LITTLE ROCK” - Fifty years later – on February 21st at 7:00 p.m. at The
Orchard School, 615 West 64th Street
Minnijean Brown Trickey - One of the historic “Little Rock Nine”
Fifty years ago, Minnijean Brown Trickey was one of the students who first desegregated allwhite Little Rock Central High School. Her bravery and tenacity places her in the eye of a
5
national storm over racial segregation. Come for an eyewitness account of the events that
forever changed the course of education in America.
 As a 16-year old high school student in 1957, Minnijean Brown Trickey and eight other
black students courageously faced threatening, angry crowds blocking their entrance and
their right to go to high school.
 The world watched as these young students-the Little Rock Nine, as they came to be knownwere escorted by National Guard troops, under Presidential order, through the doors of Little
Rock Central and into the consciousness of America.
Free event, but tickets are required. For tickets, please contact Ms. Ramona Powell, Director of
Diversity/Assistant Director for Enrollment at 317-542-1481 ext.367.
Congratulations to these students who did very well on the National German Exam!
 Juniors Kyle Barker and Amelia Schwandt both scored in the 95th percentile.
 Junior Jim Berlage scored in the 91st percentile.
 Junior Cody Mattox scored in the 84th percentile.
 Sophomore Nick Wildeman scored in the 88th percentile.
 Sophomore Victoria Alden scored in the 84th percentile.
We are very pleased with you academic achievement!
Congratulations to College Advisor Mrs. Kathy Pivonka! While on a college visit to the
University of Miami, she was nominated by Madison Head (’07), a freshman at this university to
be honored for her work with students with both admission and with financial aid. The award
she was given the “Excellence in Counseling Award.” Congratulations to Mrs. Pivonka and
thanks to Madison for making this possible!

The Mother’s Club would like to invite everyone to our next meeting on Friday, February
15th at 9:30 a.m. in the Baker Board Room. We are very excited to announce Ramona Powell
as our guest speaker. Ramona is the Director of Diversity at Cathedral and will talk to us
specifically about her role at Cathedral as well as her goals for the 2007-2008 school year. At
6
this meeting, we will also begin the process of seeking chair people for next school year. Please
plan to join us for this meeting!
Our Mission Statement calls us to carry out the ideals of our founders, the Brothers of
Holy Cross, who made Cathedral High School a beacon of education for all of the Catholic boys
of Indianapolis. We have made great strides in meeting our call to diversity since Mrs. Powell
joined our faculty and staff.
A big thank you to Mrs. Ramona Powell, Director of Diversity, who gave us the opportunity to
help our community as we were getting better acquainted with faculty members with whom we
do not know well during our service day on Wednesday, January 30th. I also want to share a
wonderful quote I got from a “neighbor,” which is the name that was used when referring to one
of the homeless that we served on that day.
 This is a comment that one of our neighbors said to one of our faculty members that day:
“Today I got things done in 2 hours what it had taken me two months to get done”. The
same man said with a broad smile “I usually hear “I can’t,” and today I have heard a lot of “I
cans”.
 It is a bit scary to think how much of our society could be just a few paychecks away from
this same situation.

The Indiana All-State Band has announced the results of the auditions across the state for the
top 150 band instrumentalists. Cathedral is very proud of sophomore Zach Czachura who
auditioned for and was accepted to this honor band. Junior Matthew Miller was selected as an
alternate on oboe for the band. There are over 1100 students in Indiana who try out for the 150
spots - it is the most difficult honor band in the state to get into. Congratulations Zach and
Matthew for being selected as one of the top musicians in the State of Indiana. The Indiana
All-State Band weekend will occur on March 7-9, 2008 on the campus of Indiana University.
The 2008 Power of Children Awards applications are now available - The Power of Children
Awards: Making a Difference is an annual event intended to honor and further empower middle
and high school students (grades 6–11) who have made a significant impact on the lives of
others, demonstrated selflessness and exhibited a commitment to service and the betterment of
society. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is seeking to nurture and recognize youth as
role models who exemplify an extraordinary commitment to public service and social
responsibility; youth who have planted the seeds of hope and promise in others.
 The Children’s Museum has long recognized that children in Indiana make significant
contributions and create important projects to benefit their fellow citizens, neighbors and
communities. The Power of Children Awards (POCA), created in 2005, are clearly aligned
with the mission of The Children’s Museum: to create extraordinary learning experiences
that have the power to transform the lives of children and families. The awards were inspired
by the museum’s dynamic permanent exhibit, The Power of Children: Making a Difference,
which features three extraordinary children who touched the world in unique ways: Anne
Frank, Ruby Bridges and Ryan White.
 Awards Presentation and Recognition
The Deborah Joy Simon Charitable Trust has generously provided a major gift to support the
establishment of The Power of Children Awards. Additional support has been provided by
Crowe Chizek and Company LLC, WISH-TV 8 and the Indiana Department of Education.
The awards will be presented during a special event at The Children’s Museum of
Indianapolis in November 2008. Each award recipient will receive the following:
o A grant of $2,000, to be used to further the recipient’s extraordinary work
o A 4 year post-secondary educational scholarship to a participating Indiana-based
institution of higher learning
10
o

Write an essay for a possible scholarship. Mrs. Scheetz is encouraging any student who was not
yet 16 by Dec. 31, 2007 to write a speech for this contest. She will be happy to help them either
before or after school or during my resource.
 The contest is February 26th for the boys and February 19th for the girls.
 Students can win up to a $1500.00 scholarship. Cathedral has been represented so well in
this city and then in the state-wide contest. We have won both divisions, both 1st and 2nd
places for the last few years. Mrs. Scheetz is quoted as saying, “Our kids do a fantastic job.
I would just need to let them know how many students from here to expect so please send
your kids my way as soon as possible, please. I love to work with these young people. I am
always inspired by their vision, their wisdom and their idealism is contagious. Please advise
if you know any student you could encourage to participate in this.”
The title for their 4-5 minute speech is to be: “Why Me? Why Not?”
Interested? See Mrs. Scheetz for an application, for any questions and to set up times to discuss
ideas about your speech.

Thanks for all your support and participation in the 2nd Student Diversity Leadership
Conference. Our student workshop presenters did an awesome job in delivering messages
dealing with all aspects of diversity. Messages of how we must be more aware of our actions
15
and the role we can play in helping one another become more culturally competent. There was
one theme that seemed to flow throughout all of the presentations and that was…
R-E-S-P-E-C-T !
 Our students delivered their presentations in a very professional manner and were well
prepared in presenting four sessions throughout the day. All presenters arrived as scheduled
to get set up and they were ready to receive the students as they entered the workshops.
Every student attending the conference was scheduled to attend all four workshops. Believe
it or not! We did survive the dance that evening. While I can’t hear as well today as I could
a week ago, it was a great evening for the students and it was without incident. The students
seemed to have fun dancing and taking time to network. I also believe some of the
chaperones had a great time as well . Some of them took to the dance floor towards the end
of the evening and the students seemed to get a kick out of seeming them to the latest moves.
One of our chaperones shared with me they had never chaperoned a dance where students
were so well behaved, but I don’t think that’s a surprise to the consortium!
 This year we had 91 students in attendance representing 6 consortium schools, that’s an
increase in attendance of 23% over the last conference!
 Here are your 2008 Conference Presenters:
 Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School – “Respect Between Genders”
 Betsy Redelman
 Evan Sanders
 Cathedral High School – “Are You Stereotyped?”
 Keenan Collins
 Alyssa Howard
 Lesley Perry
 Toure′ Scott
 Kenee′ Walton
 Kevin Williams
 Park Tudor School – “The Big Eight Identifiers”
 Anthony Graves
 Jeffery Payne
 Jennifer Richardson
 Sterling Summerville
 Park Tudor – “Silent Circle”
 Deja Morton
 Reggie Nesbit
 Meg Patterson
 Kristen Rogers
 We want to also thank those students who contributed to the workshops, and to those that
contributed but were unable to attend due to illness.
 Special thanks are given to our parents who volunteered during the conference and dance.
WHY BUY A BRICK NOW?

This brick campaign is a Mother’s Club fundraiser that we use to fund our overall goal
of purchasing items that directly benefit the students at Cathedral.

We have been running our brick campaign every THREE (3) years, so the next
opportunity to purchase an engraved brick probably won’t come until 2011.
16
The bricks will be placed in the courtyard outside of the Student Life Center next to the bricks
from previous campaigns. The engraving will take place over spring break (just in time for
graduation!).

Service Opportunities During Lent:
Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service
stewardship during Lent. Thank you for supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm
and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an interest not listed, you may also consult the list
of service agencies available by clicking here. Seniors, I am asking that you submit your
completed service documentation by Feb 28, 2008 so that I may evaluate who has not completed
the graduation requirement of 80 service hours. For all other students, continue working hard on
your service hours. If I can assist you in your service objectives, please do not hesitate to call or
email Mrs. Halstead at chalstead@cathedral-irish.org.

mandatory training on Saturday, Feb 9 from 8 to 1:00 PM, Tuesday Feb 12 from 5:30-8:30 and
Wednesday Feb 13 from 5:30-8:30. The training is mandatory and then you can assist with the
program at Second Presbyterian twice per month. Click here for more details (1). Seniors Jenna
Fischer and Morgan Corbitt welcome your questions about this great program that they have
assisted the first semester of this year.

month is really appreciated. Because it is cold, more individuals are physically using the day
center and are demonstrating strong interest in these classes. Cathedral seniors are doing an
excellent job of instruction. Just three weeks ago when serving dinner at the Wheeler Mission
Men's Mission with juniors, three of the clients came up and told us how much the computer

Wheeler Mission Study Buddies
Thank you for the welcome and support given to our Wheeler Mission visitors at the Cathedral v.
Heritage Christian Varsity and JV boys basketball game on Feb 2. Fifteens Cathedral students
gathered to host these students. A new opportunity to tutor elementary students who are behind
in their academic level is being offered entitled “Buddy Up to Study”. If you might have an
interest to help tutor these 7-10 year students who are behind their academic level and need
remedial assistance, please email Mrs. Halstead to indicate your interest. This would be a Spring
tutoring opportunity on Mondays from 3:45 to 6 PM. You could have a partner do this with you
so that you would be obligated to attend twice per month. Additional parent chaperones are also
needed. Thank you for considering this very worthy project.
Chaperones
The class service projects all involve some illuminating extensions into our community needs.
Some of the projects needing assistance are:
Freshmen: Driving and helping at the Christmas store for the freshmen service
project.
Sophomores: Assisting sophomores to drive to and help Lucious Newsom serve families
at a monthly Wednesday spaghetti dinner
passing out foods on Saturday mornings.
Juniors:
Helping and driving once a month (Tuesday or Thursday) Wheeler Mission
Community Center’s Boys and Girls Clubs
Serving meals to residents of the Care Center, Men’s Mission, and
Lighthouse Mission
Seniors:
To drive and chaperone the seniors teach computer literacy
(Office software products) to homeless individuals at Horizon
House on Saturdays from 12-2 PM.
20
Simply check on the Web under On Campus/Campus Ministry/Service Enrichment and consult
the individual class service projects listed on the left for dates and times that you may be
interested in helping. Please email chalstead@cathedral-irish.org with your interest. Often times
the simple involvement of an additional adult help ensure the well being of our students as they
truly serve the disadvantaged. This is an especially significant undertaking for a parent and
student to share during Lent.

Boys BasketballOur Class 4A state-ranked #5 Varsity Boys' Basketball team suffered a disappointing loss to
Class 3A #10 Bishop Chatard on Tuesday evening, Jan. 29th, in the Welch Activity Center. The
Fighting Irish held a five point lead with just under 3 minutes to go in the game, but Chatard's
backcourt scored 11 unanswered points, including back-to-back three pointers, to pull off the 6155 upset. Kelsey Barlow and teammate Errick Peck combined for 33 points and 13 rebounds in
the game. The Trojans took advantage of missed free throw opportunities and missed blockouts
by the Irish down the stretch to secure the victory. Our Fighting Irish rebounded quickly from
this loss as they soundly defeated Heritage Christian on Saturday, Feb. 2nd, 79-36 to improve
their record to 15-2 on the season. Junior Errick Peck registered a double-double with 22 points
and 12 rebounds. Senior guards Billy Powers and Brian Shelbourne gave the Irish quality
minutes off the bench as the duo combined for 17 points and 4 steals.
 Our boys' JV team posted a hard-fought 44-37 victory over arch-rival Bishop Chatard on
Tuesday evening. The Irish led 34-21 at the end of three quarters, but the Trojans fought


back to within one point late in the game. The Irish connected in 10-14 free throws in the
last quarter. Kofi Hughes and Sean Worland sank crucial free throws in the final minute to
seal the victory for the Irish. Kofi Hughes scored 12 points in the contest while post players
Camaron Beard and Kevin Owens combined for 17 points. The JV team dropped a close
contest 39-44 to Heritage Christian on Saturday evening, Feb. 2nd. With the game tied at the
end of three quarters of play, the Eagles hit 11-15 free throws in the final six minutes to
defeat the Irish. Franqlin Gatson scored 12 points while Kevin Owens added 10 points for
our 10-6 JV Fighting Irish.
The JV and Varsity team will be back in action this week as they host Roncalli on Thursday,
Feb. 7th in the Welch Activity Center. The JV will tip off at 6:00 pm with the Varsity
following at 7:30 pm. Best of luck Irish!
WrestlingThe Fighting Irish wrestling team advanced to the Team Regional held at North Central High
School on Wednesday, Jan. 30th. The Irish soundly defeated Pendleton Heights 59-12 in the
opening round, but suffered a heart-breaking loss to Lawrence North in the Regional final. After
battling to a 31-31 tie, the Wildcats were declared the winner on the third criteria of the tiebreaker as the Wildcats recorded one more pin than the Irish in the match.
Individually, the Irish qualified one representative in each weight class for the Individual
Regional competition held at Pendleton Heights on Saturday, Feb. 2nd. The Irish came away
with six individual winners. Congratulations to the following regional winners in their
respective weight classes: Brandon Wright (112 lbs.), Dominic Corsaro (130 lbs.), Calvin
Sullivan (135 lbs.), Tony McGinley (140 lbs.), Gavin McGinley (145 lbs.), and Connor

Roytek (3rd place - 103 lbs.), Johnny Grey (3rd place - 119 lbs.) and Tom Stipp (3rd place 152 lbs.). Semi-state wrestling action will begin @ 9:00 am this Saturday, Feb. 9th at New
Castle High School. Best of luck to the wrestlers!
Girls' BasketballThe Varsity Lady Irish picked up its 12th win of the season by posting a convincing 8064 victory over Arsenal Tech in its last regular season game on Saturday afternoon. Adrienne
Sahm had the hot hand early as she scored 20 of her game-high 25 points in the 1st half.
Michelle Roberson picked up the scoring slack in the 2nd half scoring 18 of her 24 points in the
final 2 quarters. Although plagued by foul trouble most of the game, the inside duo of Kristen
Linenberg and Abby MacGill combined for 15 points and 16 rebounds.
 The JV team defeated Arsenal Tech 35-29 to finish the season with a 14-8 record. Against
Arsenal Tech offensive balance was the key as eight players scored between 2 and 6 points.
Spencer Toby and Ally Khajenouri led the way with six points a piece.
 The Varsity Lady Irish will compete in the 1st round of the 2008 IHSAA Sectional
Tournament this week. The Lady Irish will face Warren Central @ 7:30 pm on Wednesday,

Lady Irish finished the season with an 11-7 record, including impressive victories
over Arlington, Noblesville, and New Palestine. Special thanks to Coaches Mike Jaskoski and
April Kilbarger for their leadership in blending the team together!
 The boys' freshman basketball team hosted the Irish Invitational this past weekend in the
Welch Activity Center. The Irish defeated Lafayette Central Catholic in the opening game
51-47 as they displayed great offensive balance throughout the game. Eleven individual
players scored between 3 and 8 points in the contest. Kyle Kennedy knocked down six free
throws in the closing minutes to seal the victory. The Irish then faced Center Grove in the
championship game. The Irish hung tough throughout, but Center Grove shot 9-12 from the
free throw line in the 4th quarter to defeat the Irish 56-47. Brooks Butler and Matt Seward
combined for 20 points, including 5 three-pointers. Our 13-3 Irish will travel to Anderson
Highland on Wednesday, Feb. 6th for a 6:00 game. Best of luck!

Today is Ash Wednesday and is the beginning of Lent, 2008. We celebrated Liturgy in the
Robert V. Welch Student Activity Center this morning with many students serving as lectors,
petitioners, Eucharistic ministers and as distributors of ashes. We were led by one of our
Cathedral choirs with accompaniment from some of the Pride of the Irish.

The Liturgy was prayerful and lovely. Teacher Zac Karanovich introduced the program with
some reflections about Lent and the deeper meaning of this special season. Father Munshower
offered the Mass for the Cathedral family. Our students were attentive, participative, and most
reverent during this Lenten celebration.
