Summary

This document constitutes the deliverable D5.1

Dissemination Plan

of the

Workpackage 5 of the BIMELEG

Greek, why not? Bilingual Method for Learning

Greek

project. It includes an overview of the approach to dissemination, a review of the overall objectives of the service dissemination strategy and a description of dissemination activities that will be undertaken through the end of the project and in the future.

The dissemination objectives are:

 to raise an awareness for the innovative methodology and the produced tools of the project

 to get in contact with teachers and decision makers in universities, Life Long

Training institutions and secondary education providers

 to reach, finally, all the target groups for which it is designed

The project is expected to meet real educational needs as it will address proven educational gaps of GFL (Greek as a Foreign Language) teaching either in methodology or in material (e.g. its bilingual aspect, the creation of pre-A level) and will ultimately produce a concise, efficient GFL method, that fully conforms to the

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. An additional important aspect of the project’s material will be its flexibility as it must be appropriate both for autonomous learning and for classroom and must efficiently address groups as various as university students, students of secondary education, expatriates and immigrants.

Part 1

Dissemination Plan

A goal of the dissemination plan is that the activities will start as early as possible during the project’s development and that they will continue and intensify after its completion.

 Development of a project’s brochure

 Participation and presentation of the project to GFL conferences

 Organisation of workshops

 Organisation of round table meetings

 A conference on GFL focusing on the presentation of the material

 Demo products distributed to relevant educational institutions

 A strong web presence providing information on the objectives of the project, its development and upcoming events and presenting the completed products

 One-to-one contacts with GFL teachers and decision makers in universities, private or public LLT centres, secondary schools and relevant associations

 Direct mailing to educational professionals

 Targeted presentation to educational institutions

 Newsletters, Press releases

 Advertisements in the Internet, in specialized GFL magazines and publications of GFL dissemination organizations

B. Dissemination Objectives and Role of the Partners

P1 (NEOHEL) will take the lead in this work package making use of P1’s existing contacts as it is also a publishing company with a long experience in the field and an established commercial network. However, all partners are well respected educational institutions with a recognized status in their respective domain, each with its own extensive network of contacts and affiliations.

In consequence, one of the subjects of the first Partners’ meeting (12-13 November

2010, in Athens) was the dissemination strategy, objectives and activities of the project. A questionnaire about the role each partner could play in the dissemination was handed out and discussed. (See attachment)

The following objectives of the dissemination strategy were discussed:

Raising an awareness for the innovative methodology and the

produced tools of the project

The idea for the creation of the material derived from the long standing collaboration and experience of the Partners and their common goal to promote

Greek in the EU & beyond. The Partners have examined thoroughly the most widely used material and have concluded that none of the examined material fully conforms to CEFR.

The Partners have also agreed on the need for a bilingual material, non existent in the present market. As stated in latest research (e.g. Rubicki, 2002) providing instructions and other material in the student's L1 facilitates dramatically the learning process.

The material will also be designed for interactive and independent learning, promoting student's autonomy. The website and the CDs will constitute valuable tools of this aspect of the project.

According to research on phonemic awareness, the majority of mistakes, even among advanced students, are due to the inadequate teaching material at the early stages of GFL (e.g. Anastasiadi-Symeonidi at al., 2008). By introducing a pre-A level focusing on literacy issues, the material aims at eliminating the above phonemic and pronunciation difficulties at the earliest stage.

The consortium places great emphasis on the pre-A, A1, A2 levels of GFL. The goal is to familiarize students as early as possible with the particularities of the Greek language and to eliminate present educational gaps that contribute greatly to the alarming drop-out rate at the intermediate levels.

The design of the material is an essential part of its originality. The vibrant, interesting, authentic content and its intercultural presentation would attract, encourage, and convince reluctant EU citizens to learn Greek.

The consortium believes strongly in the necessity of the material in the present market and intends to complete the series, in the future, with B1, B2, C1 and C2 levels, thus rendering, hopefully, GFL learning as accessible and efficient as the most spoken languages in the EU.

Reaching the teachers and decision makers of GFL educational

Reaching the Target Groups of the project

The project’s target groups include:

 The students of the Partners as well as their affiliates, including

P1's Comenius/Grundtvig in-training seminars participants.

 Beginner students in the departments of GFL of EU Universities.

Relevant language versions of the bilingual method: French (in

France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland), English (in U.K.,

Ireland. Additionally English used as lingua franca) and Turkish.

Students in the GFL departments of universities in Albania and the

Russian speaking countries.

Students who come to Greece with Erasmus program and foreign students in Greek universities’ intensive GFL courses wishing to follow academic studies in Greece (Relevant language versions:

English, Russian, French, Albanian and Turkish).

GFL adult learners in state or private LLT courses and EU citizens who are reluctant to learn Greek due to its reputation as a difficult language.

 Immigrants in the Ι.Δ.Ε.Κ.Ε. (LLT Institutes of the Greek State)

GFL courses (Relevant language versions: Albanian, Russian and

English as a lingua franca) and generally immigrants (especially women) unable to follow classes at all or in a regular basis.

 Participants in Cyprus' KIE (National LLT Institutes) GFL courses either for immigrants (relevant language versions: Albanian,

Russian and English as a lingua franca) or for Turkish-Cypriots

(Turkish version) in the special KIE courses in Lefkosia, Lemesos,

Larnaka, Ammohostos and Pafos (600-700 students).

Greece's trading partners (Russian, Albanian, English versions) and their expatriate employees in Greece.

Greek Diaspora in EU and beyond and repatriated Greeks.

The immigrants in Greece and Cyprus constitute a very important target group of the project. In Greece their number surpasses the 1/10 of the total population. Albanians constitute 80% of the immigrant population while Russian speaking nationalities form the 2 nd biggest group. Their integration depends upon a good understanding of Greek language and culture. Additionally in order to obtain the Greek nationality an A2 level Competency is required by law. The proposed bilingual material regards language learning as a social process that takes into account the student's background and Language 1.

In order for the above mentioned objectives to be achieved each partner of the consortium proposed a number of measures and contacts (in addition to the dissemination material and activities discussed in part 2).

Specifically:

P1 (NEOHEL) organizes In-Training Seminars for teachers of GFL-

(Comenius/Grundtvig programmes) and as a publisher provides teaching material for

GFL adult students (“Greek for Foreigners 1-4” 1969-95). P1 has access to universities & vocational training centres, language institutes, state Life Long

Training institutes for immigrants in Greece & Cyprus and bookshops in Greece and the EU. P1 is also a provider of ASTERIAS (GFL materials for pupils until the age of

15 with LINGUA projects) to foreign schools in Greece and Greek schools in the EU, which have made express demands for the creation of material for ages 16-18.

P1 will reach the above mentioned groups mainly by mail, one-to-one contacts, by organizing meetings, by distributing demo products of the project and by targeted presentations of the material.

P2 (St.Lawrence College) was awarded the Cambridge “Excellence in Education” and applies a pilot GFL programme for all foreign schools in Greece. P2 will inform through mail, personal contact and a round table discussion, foreign schools in

Greece, university departments and associations (e.g. the Hellenic-American Union

Institution) that teach Greek as a foreign language.

P3 (University of Strasbourg) has created a site for 25 GFL University departments in France, Belgium and Switzerland, publishes a guide for Greek studies for the latter and organizes regularly conferences. P3 also collaborates in GFL summer programs organized by Greek universities and cooperates with many GFL

Life Long Training language Centers.

P3 will contact and keep informed by mails and one-to-one contacts the following institutions:

 The French speaking university departments of Neo-Hellenic studies in

France, Belgium and Switzerland

 The university centers of Autonomous training with which it collaborates

(SPIRAL, CRL)

 The open universities (Universités populaires)

P3 will additionally organize round table discussions and a conference.

P4 (University of Ankara) collaborates with the Neo-Hellenic departments of the

Universities of Istanbul, Trakya & Idirne, with the GFL departments of the TÖMER

Centre (

Turkish and Foreign Languages Research and Application Centre

) of the

University of Ankara and with LLT Language centers offering GFL courses. P4 will present the project and its material to the above mentioned institutions through mails, one-to-one meetings and the organization of round table discussions.

P5 (University of Mariupol) is the leading centre of the Neo-Hellenic departments of 12 Universities in Ukraine. P5 is also in charge of Modern Greek Studies in the educational establishments of all grades (including schools and vocational institutions), organizes annual conferences on GFL and is co-responsible (with the

Greek Ministry of Education) for GFL policy in all Former Soviet Republics. P5 also provides GFL courses to 102 Greek communities.

The final product will be disseminated via the wide cooperation network of

Mariupol State University in the sphere of Hellenic studies, not only in Ukraine, but also in the Russian Federation and other CIS countries, mostly Russian speaking. The organizations and institutions to be involved into the dissemination process are:

University in Georgia, the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Kazakhstan and the: Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Lomonosov Moscow State

University, Moscow Theological Academy, Saint-Petersburg State University and

Kuban State University in the Russian Federation.

The above institutions will be reached by:

- Applying to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and other target countries via NGOs for the Greek Ethnic Minority and the interested universities for the acknowledgement of the suggested teaching material as recommended for the state educational establishments, thus involving the state to the financing of the dissemination process.

- Sending information to the above-mentioned institutions.

- Disseminating samples to the target institutions and to the main state libraries.

- Downloading data about the project to the websites of the Mariupol State

University and its partner-organizations, teachers’ and scientific journals, mass-media etc.

- Organizing promotional seminars for GFL teachers at the Mariupol State University.

The material will be further presented in the premises of the Mariupol State

University during its lifetime and after its completion during the following annual events:

- the Ukrainian National Modern Greek Language Contest for Students (April 2011, 2012)

- the Ukrainian National Modern Greek Language Contest for School Pupils (April 2011, 2012)

- the Ukrainian National Research Students Contest in Hellenic Studies (24 th March 2011,

2012)

- the Ukrainian National Seminar for School Teachers of Modern Greece (April 2011, 2012)

- in the International Scientific Conference, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Mariupol

State University “Science and Education in the Modern University in the Context of the

International Co-operation” (23-25th of May, 2011)

P6 (“Eqrem Çabej” University) collaborates with GFL centers, Institutions of

Vocational Training & Albanian Associations in Greece. P6 also organizes with the

University of Ioannina, Greece in-training seminars for teachers of GFL to Albanian learners. P6 will present the project and its material through mails, one-to-one meetings and the organization of a round table discussion to the Neo-Hellenic department of the University of Tirana, to the bilingual (Greek-Albanian) private schools and institutions in Tirana, Korçë & Himara and to the educational institutions of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania. P6 will also contact LLT private institutions offering Greek language courses in Albania.

The consortium remains committed to further refining the Dissemination strategy and objectives, as well as to including additional activities at the end of project.

Part 2

Dissemination Material

 Project Brochure

Information brochure, date of delivery: 18/05/2011

Language versions: Greek, French, English, Turkish, Russian, Albanian

The project brochure will be produced in six languages and distributed among teachers, students and other interested target groups in the participating countries and the European Market. It will contain information about the project's goals and objectives and contact information about the consortium partners.

P1 (NEOHEL) will subcontract the brochure and will carry the main part of its dissemination. Each partner will translate the content of the brochure and distribute it through its network.

 Conference

This conference on Greek as a Foreign Language teaching and teaching material will be organized by P3 (University of Strasbourg) in Strasbourg, in October 2012. A presentation of the project will be the focus of the event, with participants from

Greek as a Foreign Language university departments (including those from the 25

French-speaking universities in the EU), state & private Life Long Training Language

Centres and language centres and schools of the Greek communities. P1 (NEOHEL) and P3 will be the main presenters in the conference, while the rest of the partners will be active participants focusing on the bilingual and intercultural aspects of the project.

 Round Table discussions during project meetings

These public round table events, with all the partners participating, will present the opportunity to discuss the material openly and receive suggestions, comments and questions by all public concerned. Teaching staff & decision makers of university departments, schools, state & private LLT language centres, including the external evaluator (Faculty of Linguistics, University of Athens) will be dully invited.

The 1 st All Partners meeting took place in Athens (12-13 November 2010) and was not public.

If economically feasible, an additional All Partners meeting will be organized in

Mariupol, Ukraine. The vast network of the University of Mariupol could play an important role in the implementation and dissemination of the project’s material and an All Partners meeting in its premises would be of great value. An alternative possibility is that the scheduled 3 rd meeting (August 2011) will take place in

Mariupol, instead of in Athens.

 Round Table discussions independent of All Partners’ meetings

These events will give the opportunity to each partner to present the project’s material to its own network of collaborators and affiliates.

Partners that will organize round table discussions during and after the project’s lifetime are:

P1 (NEOHEL) : addressing GFL teachers and decision makers of Universities and

LLT Institutions in Greece And Cyprus.

P2 (St.Lawrence College) : addressing teachers and decision makers of foreign schools in Greece that teach Greek as a Foreign Language and of Intercultural

Institutions and Associations that offer GFL courses.

P3 (University of Strasbourg): addressing teachers and decision makers of

French-speaking university departments of Neo-Hellenic studies (in France, Belgium,

Switzerland), of LLT Centers (e.g. SPIRAL, CRL), of open universities (Universités populaires) and of schools of the Greek communities.

P4 (University of Ankara): addressing teachers and decision makers of the Neo-

Hellenic departments of the Universities of Istanbul, Idirne & Trakya , of the

TÖMER

-Turkish and Foreign Languages Research and Application Centre

and of Private

Institutions that offer GFL courses in Turkey.

P5 (University of Mariupol): addressing the teachers and decision-makers of the

Attainment in Greek in Ukraine and in the CIS countries, of the Federation of Greek

Societies of Ukraine, of the Odessa Branch of Hellenic Foundation for Culture, of the

Coordinating Council for the Former USSR Countries Region of the World Council of

Hellenes Abroad et al.

P6(“Eqrem Çabej” University) : addressing teachers and decision-makers of the

Neo-Hellenic department of the University of Tirana, of the bilingual (Greel-Albanian) private schools and institutions in Tirana, Korçë & Himara and of other private institutions offering GFL courses in Albania.

Whenever possible, the other partners (especially P1 & P3) will participate in these events.

 Workshops for teachers of GFL (Greek as a Foreign Language)

The material will be presented at GFL teachers' workshops and will be used for model teaching. The participants will be asked to create, on the basis of a particular unit, a lesson plan and a list of targets and objectives, depending on a pre-specified target group. The input of this exercise will contribute to the general evaluation of the project while also familiarizing teachers with this new material. The workshops will be organized during the project’s lifetime (starting the summer of 2011) and after its completion.

P1 will present the material to its In-Training seminars for GFL teachers

(COMENIUS/GRUNTVIG).

Partners who could also organize Workshops for teachers of GFL :

P2 (St. Lawrence College) – Workshops for GFL teachers in secondary education.

P3 (University of Strasbourg) – Workshops in the intensive In-Training seminars for

GFL University and LLT teachers (possibly from summer 2011 onwards).

P5 (University of Mariupol) - in its training seminars for GFL University and LLT teachers (P5, as a leading Hellenic Studies higher educational establishment in

Ukraine and the former CIS countries, organizes GFL seminars on a regular basis).

P6 (“Eqrem Çabej” University) - despite the large number of GFL teachers and students in Albania, there are no specialized courses for GFL teachers at the moment. The “Eqrem Çabej” university feels that the organisation of such seminars would be of great value and will undertake it, if proven economically feasible.

 Website

During the project’s lifetime the website will serve not only as a means of direct communication between the partners but also as a general platform for informing the public about the project. It will include:

- profiles of the partners and their respective institutions

- a general presentation of the project, its objectives and aims

- a detailed presentation of each part of the material as it is completed

- newsletters announcing events relating to the project (presentations in

Conferences, scheduled meetings and round table discussions etc)

P1 (NEOHEL) will create the content of the website (work in progress) while each partner will undertake the necessary translations (the “informational” part of the website being in all six languages).
