Course description:
In this course, students will learn simplified Chinese characters and standard
Mandarin Chinese pronunciation. The goal of the course is to develop students’ basic
Mandarin communicative skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with more
focus on speaking and listening. Starting with pinyin, students will gradually build up
their communicative competency in Mandarin Chinese. Moreover, the course will
integrate Chinese culture to promote students’ cross-cultural awareness and
understanding. Due to the great differences in Mandarin and English, students will
also be introduced strategies and skills in learning Mandarin Chinese as a foreign
language.
Course organization:
The course start with review the basic Chinese language and skills first, It will focus
on the training of Chinese communicative competence and also on motivating the
student. In addition, the course is devoted to forming a solid foundation for the
students’ further study.
Quarter 1: In the first quarter, student will learn about family and how to ask and
answer age in Chinese (including listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and
writing skill).
Quarter 2: The second quarter will examine the success of what the student learn from
the first quarter first. And then, the student will learn animal and direction. This
course involves listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and writing skill.
Quarter 3: The third quarter will reinforce vocabulary with review of what the student
learn from the first tow quarter. Then, the student will learn to talk about food and
time in Chinese (including listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and writing
skill).
Quarter 4: The fourth quarter will examine the success of what the student have
learned. And then, the student will start to learn about school life and weather,The
course contains listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and writing skill.

Course learning objective:
1. Develop the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin.
2. Focus on improving the basic skills in pronunciation; consolidate the skill of
spelling Chinese words.
3. Develop the abilities to use the Mandarin effectively and appropriately for
purpose of practical communication.
4. Motivate students in learning Chinese by offering some culture and game when in
teaching.

1. Quarter 1: Unit One – family; Unit Two –age
2. Quarter 2: Unit Three–animal ; Unit Four –direction
3. Quarter 3: Unit Five – food; Unit Six – time
4. Quarter 4: Unit Seven – school life; Unit Eight –weather
