Grade 2 Mandarin Chinese Syllabus: NIVA 2015-2016 Textbook: KAIKAI HANYU 2 Internet Materials Course description: In this course, students will learn simplified Chinese characters and standard Mandarin Chinese pronunciation. The goal of the course is to develop students’ basic Mandarin communicative skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with more focus on speaking and listening. Starting with pinyin, students will gradually build up their communicative competency in Mandarin Chinese. Moreover, the course will integrate Chinese culture to promote students’ cross-cultural awareness and understanding. Due to the great differences in Mandarin and English, students will also be introduced strategies and skills in learning Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. Course organization: The course start with review the basic Chinese language and skills first, It will focus on the training of Chinese communicative competence and also on motivating the student. In addition, the course is devoted to forming a solid foundation for the students’ further study. Quarter 1: In the first quarter, student will learn about family and how to ask and answer age in Chinese (including listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and writing skill). Quarter 2: The second quarter will examine the success of what the student learn from the first quarter first. And then, the student will learn animal and direction. This course involves listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and writing skill. Quarter 3: The third quarter will reinforce vocabulary with review of what the student learn from the first tow quarter. Then, the student will learn to talk about food and time in Chinese (including listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and writing skill). Quarter 4: The fourth quarter will examine the success of what the student have learned. And then, the student will start to learn about school life and weather,The course contains listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and writing skill.
