Unit: Nutrition/Math, Third Grade Title of Lesson: Out of this Whirled Smoothie Standard: Health Education Kindergarten through grade three Expectation 1: Students demonstrate ways in which they can enhance and maintain their health and well-being. Food Choices: -Making healthy food choices. -Grouping foods in many different ways-for example, by taste, smell, feel, color, sound, origin (plant or animal), or category. Math 3.3.1 Compare fractions represented by drawings or concrete materials to show equivalency and to add and subtract simple fractions in context. Objective: Students will be able to compare fractions and write fractions in numbers and words. Students will know MyPyramid and understand its importance. Students will know the difference between a healthy and unhealthy snack and the nutritional benefits of the ingredients of the recipe. Materials: Out of this Whirled Smoothie recipe, worksheet, and overhead MyPyramid worksheet, overhead, and fruit cut-outs Fraction diagrams Scissors and glue sticks Out of this Whirled Smoothie ingredients Cups, spoons, napkins, hand wipes, and blender Optional: laminated fraction diagrams and food cards Procedures: 1. Introduction: (10 minutes) Introduce the lesson by passing out MyPyramid worksheet and discussing it. Ask students if they have ever seen MyPyramid before, if they know what it does for us, why it is important, etc. Ask students if they ate breakfast, what they ate, whether or not it is considered healthy, where those food items belong in MyPyramid and the importance of eating breakfast. Describe the relationship between nutrition and physical activity. 2. Activity: (15 minutes) Pass out the Out of this Whirled Smoothie worksheet. Read the caption next to the “fractions apple” picture. As a whole class, work on the example and questions 1-4 using the overhead. Use the laminated fraction diagrams to ask additional questions. Have students work on the “Practice” questions as the teacher prepares the smoothies. Correct the practice questions as a whole class using the overhead. Pass out scissors and glue sticks. 3. Concluding Activity: (15 minutes) Have students work on the blank MyPyramid worksheet as the teacher passes out the smoothies, napkins, spoons, and hand-wipes. Students are to cut out the pictures of fruit and glue them in the proper area of MyPyramid. Taste the smoothie and discuss whether or not this is a healthy snack that the kids can make at home. Review what food groups are represented in the recipe and the nutritional benefits of each ingredient (use the food cards). Assessment: Collect student worksheets and assess answers. Assess the students’ understanding of nutrition and fractions by reviewing their worksheets and evaluating the class discussions. Evaluate the lesson by using the student participation survey.
