Forensic Scientist (DNA) - Biological Sciences Location: Forensic Investigation Center, Building #30, 1220 Washington Avenue Albany , NY 12226 Albany County Employment Type: Full Time Union Representation: PS&T Duties & Responsibilities: Forensic Scientist 1 (DNA) - Biological Sciences Duties: Will be familiar with and aware of evidence work completed and analyses performed in other laboratory sections. Must successfully complete biological sciences training under the guidance of the Director - Biological Sciences. Appropriate training with competency and/or proficiency tests will be completed before assuming any casework. Forensic Scientist 2 (DNA) - Biological Sciences Duties: Will be proficient in all of the duties of a Forensic Scientist 1 (DNA) - Biological Sciences. Will be expected to perform appropriate sampling, preservation and/or analysis on case work or convicted offender specimens which are technically of limited complexity utilizing standard established procedures. When standard procedures are not applicable, the Forensic Scientist 2 (DNA) will discuss alternate or modified methodology with Director - Biological Sciences or designated Forensic Scientist 3 or Forensic Scientist 4 prior to conducting analysis. Plan and execute analyses, including proper quality control procedures, using instrumentation and techniques as necessary. Results will be interpreted and findings reported for court purposes. Will be guided by Director - Biological Sciences or designated Forensic Scientist 3 or Forensic Scientist 4, who will provide instructions and suggestions, technical direction, pertinent reference material and will review completed work for completeness and validity of conclusions. Will be expected to maintain and enhance his/her expertise and maintain technical proficiency in the field of forensic Biological Sciences. Forensic Scientist 3 (DNA) - Biological Sciences Duties: Will be assigned analyses of complex cases and will exercise considerable independent judgement in evaluating possible alternative methods of analysis and modify existing methodology to fit each particular investigation, subject to approval of the Director - Biological Sciences. Will be proficient in all of the duties of a Forensic Scientist 2 (DNA) - Biological Sciences. Will interpret data and results derived from analyses and report findings and conclusions. Will work with little supervision and will inform the Director Biological Sciences or Assistant Director - SP Labs of any unusual or unexpected developments that may occur during his/her analysis. Expected to perform troubleshooting and maintenance tasks within the section. May be required to assume the duties of Technical Coordinator - Biological Sciences and/or Director - Biological Sciences in his/her absence. Minimum and/or Preferred Qualifications: Forensic Scientist 1 (DNA) - Biological Sciences Minimum Qualifications: Must hold a Bachelor's Degree in the natural or physical sciences. No prior laboratory experience required. Preference will be given to: Applicants who have successfully completed college course work (graduate and undergraduate level) covering the subject areas of biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, as well as statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis. Applicants with a minimum of six months of forensic DNA laboratory experience, including the successful analysis of a range of samples typically encountered in forensic case work prior to independent case work analysis using DNA technology. Forensic Scientist 2 (DNA) - Biological Sciences Minimum Qualifications: Shall have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or its equivalent degree in areas related to biology, chemistry, or forensic science; AND successfully completed college course work (graduate and undergraduate level) covering the subject areas of biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, as well as statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis. AND Have a minimum of eighteen months of satisfactory crime laboratory experience at the Forensic Scientist 1 (DNA) Biological Sciences level or equivalent experience in another laboratory. AND If applicable, have gained recognition as an expert witness and established his/her credentials as an expert in various courts of record. Forensic Scientist 3 (DNA) - Biological Sciences Minimum Qualifications: Shall have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or its equivalent degree in areas related to biology, chemistry, or forensic science; AND successfully completed college course work (graduate and undergraduate level) covering the subject areas of biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, as well as statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis. AND Have a minimum of four years satisfactory experience performing the duties of a Forensic Scientist - Biological Sciences or its equivalent in another laboratory. AND If applicable, experience in testimony as an expert witness and have established his/her credentials as an expert in various courts of record.
