Developing a profile of your Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service’s catchment area Do you need to create a profile of your Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service’s (TAAS) catchment area for planning purposes, submissions, funding applications and so on? Well, great stuff can be found at the Local Government Housing Kit. It’s on the website of the Centre for Affordable Housing of Housing NSW. The Local Government Housing Kit Database provides basic quantitative information on housing and housing-related matters by local government area. It allows the user to compare between local government areas, regions, statistical divisions or subdivisions. If you have any problems accessing the 2011 data, you may need to download Google Chrome or a recent version of Internet Explorer. Please note, if you are asked to provide a password please click Cancel. (You may have to click ‘Cancel’ twice.) No username or password is required to access data. If you have any problems accessing the 2011 data, you may need to download Google Chrome or a recent version of Internet Explorer. Start at the beginning and work your way through it. Go to: http://www.housing.nsw.gov.au/Centre+For+Affordable+Housing/NSW+Local+G overnment+Housing+Kit/NSW+Local+Government+Housing+Kit.htm You can extract information on number of useful variables, including 'Dwelling type', 'Bond lodgements', 'Public housing stock', 'Number of households in housing stress' and 'Proportion of housing stock that is affordable', ‘Rental affordability of CRA Recipients’, to name a few. The data is provided by local government area. However, it is very easy to collate this data for the whole of your TAAS’s catchment area. This is because TAAS’s catchment areas are defined by local government areas. First step … Go to your TAAS Contact Directory and list all the local government areas in your catchment area. Write these down on a piece of paper. Second step … 2 You will find the Local Government Housing Kit on the TAAP Intranet. Go to 'External Links' and click 'NSW Local Government Housing Kit'. Scroll down left hand side of page and click 'Local Government Housing Kit Database'. Alternatively, just click the following link: http://www.housing.nsw.gov.au/Centre+For+Affordable+Housing/NSW+Local+G overnment+Housing+Kit/Local+Government+Housing+Kit+Database.htm To commence this exercise, click 'The Local Government Housing Kit Database (2011 census)'. At 'Step 1: Selecting an LGA' of 'Welcome to the Housing Kit Database', show your first local government area. At 'Step 2: Select a Comparison Region’, you can add up to 10 other comparison areas. The Centre for Affordable Housing suggests that you select 'Sydney SD’ if you are located in Sydney, and ‘NSW excluding Sydney SD’ if you are located outside Sydney. This is in addition to ‘Total NSW'. You may include up to a further 8 local government areas. Please note that the instructions at 'Step 2' allow you to select more than one comparison area (generally local government area) by holding down the control key. If you are using an Apple computer this should read the 'Apple key'. For example, for EATS this will be Step 1: ‘Randwick’ and Step 2: ‘Sydney SD’, ‘Total NSW’, 'Waverley'. For Mid Coast Tenants Advice Service, this will be Step 1: ‘Bellingen’ and Step 2: ‘NSW excluding Sydney SD’, ‘Total NSW’, ‘Coffs Harbour’, ‘Greater Taree’, ‘Hastings’ (since 2005 known as ‘Port Macquarie Hastings’), ‘Kempsey’, ‘Nambucca’. At 'Step 3: Select the appropriate table', you do just that (for example, 'S4 Public housing stock'). You then ask the kit to save the file in a sub-directory on your computer. The file is saved as a spreadsheet (for example, an Excel file). Third step … You now can manipulate your own spreadsheet to do 'Totals' (using the 'Auto sum' facility) and so on.
