Gumataotao--for providing the 6th grade critical skills necessary for vertical alignment with our
elementary feeder schools.

Attention 8th Grade Teachers: A select number of 8th graders will be participating in the Scholastic
Challenge 2009 on Friday, Feb. 27. Each year, thousands of students of varying abilities are provided with an
entertaining and challenging enrichment activity that allows them to demonstrate a variety of problem solving
skills and knowledge in all academic areas.
Please excuse the following students at 2 p.m. (during 7th period) so they may take part in the competition:

The students will have one hour to take an online test that gives them an opportunity to answer 100 questions
divided into six categories: general knowledge, language and literature, history, geography, science and
mathematics. The students will be competing with other 8th graders in American schools from around the world. They will
compete for trophies, plaques, medals, and certificates for his/her individual and team achievement in the test. Last year,
the United States Territories Champion went to a student from Oceanview Middle School. This year, we hope to bring the
championship to the School of Excellence.

magazine about Life of Early Adolescents. Please read this article and be prepared to
dialogue on the issues during the February 27, 2009 Grade Level workshop for the core team
teachers.
Friday, February 27, 2009 - The student assemblies will be at the gym on the following
periods:
6th grade = 1st period, 7th grade = 2nd period, and 8th grade = 3rd period. SPED

gym and then Team teachers must report to Rm. 47 for a Team Workshop on Middle School
Concept.

Attention Teachers: Update your attendance cards and make sure you are keeping track of your
students’ attendance record. Complete and submit attendance referral for 12 unexcused absence.
Also, must document parent contact & counseling referral as these are expected interventions by court.

ATTENTION TEACHERS: ETS – The Educational Talent Search (ETS) meetings and tutoring have been and
continue every Wednesday during student lunch (6TH & 7th grade lunches at room 47 and 8th grade
lunch at room 31). Lunch passes are given to students the period before their grade level lunch.
Teachers, please release these passes to the respective students. Please note that students are not
allowed into the classroom for tutoring/meeting without the lunch pass.
CACGP - College Access Challenge Grant Program conducts tutoring for it’s members during lunch
time every Thursday (6TH & 7th grade lunches at room 47 and 8th grade lunch at room 31). Lunch
passes are given to students the period before their grade level lunch. Teachers, please release these
passes to the respective students. Please note that students are not allowed into the classroom for
tutoring without the lunch pass.
TO TEACHERS AND STAFF: To follow up with your referrals for counseling, please visit the respective
counselors during your team prep. Please remember we are experiencing a paper shortage and we
understand internet access in not available in certain parts of our campus.

Micronesian Youth Services Network (MYSN) is hosting its very first Oratorical Contest which
will be held on March 7, 2009 at Sanctuary, Incorporated at 2PM. The winner of this
competition will deliver their winning speech as the Youth Keynote Speaker from Guam in
MYSN 5th Annual Conference which will be held in Saipan, CNMI on March 30-April 1, 2009.
In addition, airfare and conference fee will be provided. . Registration and a copy of typed
copy of speech due no later than 5pm on Feb. 27, 2009 at Sanctuary, Incorporated. Please
refer to posting in the main office or contact Kathleen Tolosa at 475-7101 ext. 117.
ATTENTION STUDENTS: The coin drive continues to be a race to see which grade level will get
a dress down next Friday, March 6. Right now, the 7th graders are in the lead with the 6th
graders and 8th graders right behind! So bring your extra change to help in a dress down day.
The winning grade level will be announced in the bulletin on Thursday, March 5. All money collected

Attention Students: It is time to gear up for the 19th annual Youth for Youth Conference. The three (3) day conference
(April 25-27, Sat/Sun/Mon) is for teens. Goals for the conference are 1) use powerful influence to turn peer pressure from
negative to positive, 2) teach effective leadership and goal setting and 3) teach responsibility: say NO to drugs, alcohol,
tobacco and violence. INTERESTED ? See Mr. Chargualaf at the counseling center during your team time. Remember to
have your hall pass form your teacher. There are only 30 slots available at this time. Applications must be picked up in

The UMS Reading Department is sponsoring “I LOVE TO READ WEEK” February 23-27. Get involved in some of the following
activities to help promote reading at UMS, win prizes, find new books to read, and even earn a dress down day!
1. READ-A-THON: See your reading teacher for details in order to participate in this annual reading event. Not only will you
help raise money to promote reading on the island, but you may be eligible for prizes. Your reading teacher will share the
necessary information with you.
2. COIN DRIVE! Earn a dress down day and help buy your new books for the UMS library! Bring in your coins (pennies are
welcome!) and drop them in the 5 gallon container labeled with our grade level at the front of the school. The grade that
fills up their container first will get a dress down day. The money collected will be used to buy much needed books for our
school library.
3. BOOK SWAP! Need something new to read? Here’s a chance to swap books with other students. All you have to do is
bring in your books from home (good condition, appropriate for other middle school readers) and turn them in to your
reading teacher. Your teacher will give you a coupon which will entitle you to pick the same number of books that you
turned in. For example, if you turn in 5 books, you get to select 5 books. The BOOK SWAP! will be held during team time on
Friday, February 20. Your yellow book swap coupon will also serve as your pass to the library. But don’t be late!
Refreshments will be provided and those who arrive early will have the best selection of books to choose from!
4. Our library’s HUGE dictionary will be traveling around the campus. When you turn in books for the book swap you will
get a chance to guess how many pages it contains. The most accurate guesser will win $50 in free books from Scholastic
Book Company. The winner will be announced at the book swap.
