The John Cheverton Centre Information & Support Centre Earl Mountbatten Hospice, Halberry Lane, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 2ER This free drop in centre offers a warm welcome to anyone affected by a life limiting illness, including families/carers and friends. The Centre’s experienced staff offer confidential help, information and support, face to face or over the phone. There is a café available within the centre, selling light meals and refreshments. The Hospice is passionate about helping people to live as actively as possible for as long as they are able, while taking care of their physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs. Care also extends to family members, carers and close friends, who often need support throughout a person’s illness and during bereavement. There are a number of organisations who can help get this organised EMH services are not confined to the Hospice building. The specialist community team provide hospice care to people living in their own homes. This may be care when someone is near to the end of their life, respite care to enable carers to take a break, or simply during a difficult time. The Hospice also supports patients and clinical teams at St Mary’s, through the hospital palliative care team. Carers IW Carers IW offer unpaid adult carers of adults respite weekends and creative sessions. The respite activity weekends offering a range of activities, holistic therapies and meals take place at Winchester House in Lake four times a year. Carers can attend for an hour or two, the day or weekend. For more information contact: The Take a Break group offers the opportunity to meet other carers as well as taking part in creative activities, relaxation or a cup of tea and the chance to chat. Cancer support groups on the Isle of Wight A number of cancer support groups meet on the Isle of Wight. These groups consist of people who have cancer themselves and those who support them including their family, carers and friends. They can offer valuable mutual support, sharing of experience and knowledge about living with cancer. A ‘Living Well’ course can help you to gain a sense of control and make positive changes. They have been designed to work alongside your medical treatment, providing you with support at any stage of your cancer journey; before, during and after treatment. A ‘Living Well’ course can provide information on healthy eating, being active and the value of relaxation, help you cope with diagnosis and treatment, and offering space and time to focus on yourself and your relationships. These courses are free and for anyone affected by cancer and their close supporter. No referral needed. These sessions provide practical support for women and teenagers suffering from the visible side effects of cancer and other life limiting treatments. HNA covers Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton. It was set up in 2008 and is constantly developing and growing. We work with local service providers and commissioners to secure the best possible care and support for all people in the areas affected by a neurological condition. We include and represent a wide range of neurological conditions and provide information about services in the area for people with a neurological condition. An initial appointment would be held at the West Wight Sports Centre to give guidance of appropriate activities/ exercises for the individual living with cancer and any exercise classes/ gym sessions/swimming sessions or activities that they choose to do in the Sports Centre will be available at the standard cost that the Sports Centre charges. Individuals would need to get a letter from their specialist consultant or cancer nurse about their needs. A network of over 60 volunteer drivers provide an Islandwide service to take people to medical appointments and for essential services. The scheme operates on a membership basis with £30 for a single membership and £45 for a household couple, accompanying carers do not pay a membership fee. There is also 45p per mile mileage charge for each journey. They support men and women, with any type of cancer. There is no local SHINE group as the moment, but you may wish to join an on line network. You can find out more at http://www.shinecancersupport.co.uk/Pages/default.aspx Carers IW & Quay Carers Carers IW offer unpaid adult carers of adults information and support, they have various groups for either carers or former carers around the island, including in Newport, Sandown, Ventnor and Ryde and a group specifically for male carers. They also provide respite weekends for carers, support workshops for bereaved carers, one to one support, creative sessions, a ring round supporter for carers, training and a quarterly newsletter highlighting the different services available. The Red Cross will loan items of equipment for up to 3 months and individuals can decide either to buy or borrow from the Red Cross. Equipment can either be collected from or delivered by the Red Cross. For more information contact: Tel: 0844 847 7727 which is Macmillan financial help line to book an appointment Equipment – Demonstration, loan and purchase Independent Living Centre Downside Community &Learning Centre, Furrlongs, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 2AX. The Independent Living Centre is located in Newport and offers free and impartial advice to Island residents to help them find out about the aids for daily living that could enhance their lives and enable them to continue to live independently at home. Although the centre doesn’t sell anything its staff will signpost people to where they can get the aids they need, most often this will be the Red Cross who can provide an equipment loan for 3 months. The ILC works in conjunction with St Marys Hospital OT dept An OT is based at the centre to assess people with additional needs. The Blue Badge Clinic are held at the ILC twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. NHS staff, Physio and Occupational therapists assess for a Blue Badge. There are designated parking bays for visitors to the centre.
