Other activities – Complementary therapies
Some people living with cancer find complementary therapies can be
really helpful to them. Here are some of the services that are
available locally through local voluntary sector organisations
Wessex Cancer Trust Centre
The Wessex Cancer Trust offer a range of complementary therapy
sessions for people with cancer at their Centre at 19 – 21 Lugley Street,
Newport including aromatherapy, Indian head massage,
reiki and

with cancer and their carers and family

The two information centres on the Isle of Wight offer a wealth of
information about living with cancer.
The John Cheverton Centre Information & Support Centre
Earl Mountbatten Hospice, Halberry Lane, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 2ER
This free drop in centre offers a warm welcome to anyone affected by a
life limiting illness, including families/carers and friends. The Centre’s
experienced staff offer confidential help, information and support, face to
face or over the phone. There is a café available within the centre, selling
light meals and refreshments. Open Monday – Friday between 10am and
4pm.

Wessex Cancer Trust Support Centre

The Centre is open between 10 am and 4pm on Tuesday to Friday each
week. Drop in any time they are open to find out more about the
information and other support services they offer to people with cancer,
their family members and carers. You are welcome to stay for a
confidential chat with one of our trained befrienders.

Cancer – other support
Earl Mountbatten Hospice, Halberry Lane, Newport, Isle of
Wight, PO30 2ER
As the only hospice on the Island, EMH aims to improve the lives of those
within our community who are living with a life-limiting or terminal illness.
The Hospice is passionate about helping people to live as actively as
possible for as long as they are able, while taking care of their physical,
emotional, spiritual and social needs. Care also extends to family members,
carers and close friends, who often need support throughout a person’s
illness and during bereavement.

Respite breaks
Sometimes a break away from home for those living with cancer or
those caring for them is a great help. There are a number of
organisations who can help get this organised
EMH services are not confined to the Hospice building. The specialist
community team provide hospice care to people living in their own homes.
This may be care when someone is near to the end of their life, respite
care to enable carers to take a break, or simply during a difficult time. The
Hospice also supports patients and clinical teams at St Mary’s, through the
hospital palliative care team.
Carers IW
Carers IW offer unpaid adult carers of adults respite weekends and
creative sessions. The respite activity weekends offering a range of
activities, holistic therapies and meals take place at Winchester House in
Lake four times a year. Carers can attend for an hour or two, the day or
weekend.

The Take a Break group offers the opportunity to meet other carers as
well as taking part in creative activities, relaxation or a cup of tea and the
chance to chat. The sessions are provided Carers IW at Quay House in
Newport each month and are for carers of people with dementia and
their “cared for” person

Cancer support groups on the Isle of Wight
A number of cancer support groups meet on the Isle of Wight. These
groups consist of people who have cancer themselves and those who
support them including their family, carers and friends. They can
offer valuable mutual support, sharing of experience and knowledge
about living with cancer.

Living Well courses from Penny Brohn Cancer care
These courses are held at Carisbrooke Priory 3- 4 times a year. A ‘Living
Well’ course can help you to gain a sense of control and make positive
changes. They have been designed to work alongside your medical
treatment, providing you with support at any stage of your cancer journey;
before, during and after treatment. A ‘Living Well’ course can provide
information on healthy eating, being active and the value of relaxation, help
you cope with diagnosis and treatment, and offering space and time to
focus on yourself and your relationships.
These courses are free and for anyone affected by cancer and their close
supporter. No referral needed. For more information about course

Look Good, Feel Better
The John Cheverton Centre offers Look Good, Feel Better master classes
at the JCC, Earl Mountbatten Hospice, Halberry Lane, Newport, Isle of
Wight PO30 2ER on the 2nd Tuesday of each month 11am – 1pm. These
sessions provide practical support for women and teenagers suffering from
the visible side effects of cancer and other life limiting treatments.

Support for brain tumours
Hampshire and IW Neurological Alliance is an umbrella organisation for
people with neurological conditions and their carers. HNA covers
Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton. It was set up in
2008 and is constantly developing and growing. We work with local service
providers and commissioners to secure the best possible care and support
for all people in the areas affected by a neurological condition. We include
and represent a wide range of neurological conditions and provide
information about services in the area for people with a neurological
condition.

Breast Cancer - Applegate Support Group
The group meets at the Riverside Centre, Newport on the 1st Thursday of
every month between 10.30 am – 12.30 pm. The support group consists of
a group of women in similar situations who meet on a regular basis to
share their concerns. Refreshments are available. Different topic of interest
discussed every month.

Apple Blossoms
Apple Blossoms is a new group for ladies under the age of 50 diagnosed
with breast cancer. The group will be meeting on the 1st Wednesday of
each month in Newport at 6.30pm. Come along for a meal, drink & chat.

visit.

West Wight Sports Centre
A 12 week exercise on referral programme is provided for cancer patients
delivered by a dedicated fitness instructor. An initial appointment would be
held at the West Wight Sports Centre to give guidance of appropriate
activities/ exercises for the individual living with cancer and any exercise
classes/ gym sessions/swimming sessions or activities that they choose to
do in the Sports Centre will be available at the standard cost that the
Sports Centre charges. Individuals would need to get a letter from their
specialist consultant or cancer nurse about their needs.

Optio voluntary car service
The Optio voluntary car service is provided by Community Action IW. A
network of over 60 volunteer drivers provide an Islandwide service to take
people to medical appointments and for essential services. The scheme
operates on a membership basis with £30 for a single membership and £45
for a household couple, accompanying carers do not pay a membership
fee. There is also 45p per mile mileage charge for each journey.

Shine Cancer Support
Shine Cancer Support is the only registered charity in the UK exclusively
focused on supporting people in their 20s, 30s and 40s with cancer. They
support men and women, with any type of cancer. There is no local SHINE
group as the moment, but you may wish to join an on line network. You

Carers IW & Quay Carers
Carers IW offer unpaid adult carers of adults information and support,
they have various groups for either carers or former carers around the
island, including in Newport, Sandown, Ventnor and Ryde and a group
specifically for male carers. They also provide respite weekends for carers,
support workshops for bereaved carers, one to one support, creative
sessions, a ring round supporter for carers, training and a quarterly
newsletter highlighting the different services available.

Red Cross
Red Cross House, Hunnycross Way, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 5ZD
The Red Cross is situated in Newport, the centre houses equipment to
help people remain as independent for as long as possible. The Red Cross
will loan items of equipment for up to 3 months and individuals can decide
either to buy or borrow from the Red Cross. Equipment can either be
collected from or delivered by the Red Cross.

Transport
For those needing help with transport to get to appointments and
treatment there are a number of possible solutions
Wessex Cancer Trust
The Wessex Cancer Trust can provide assistance with transport both
through volunteer drivers based on the Isle of Wight and via the Trust’s
Daisy shuttle buses that run from the Portsmouth and Southampton ferry
terminals to hospitals providing cancer treatment.

Citizens Advice Bureau
Macmillan Citizens Advice Bureau sessions are provided at the John
Cheverton Centre for individuals & and carers affected by cancer on the
first Tuesday of every month between 10am-3.00pm. An appointment is
essential.

Equipment – Demonstration, loan and purchase
Independent Living Centre
Downside Community &Learning Centre, Furrlongs, Newport, Isle of
Wight, PO30 2AX.
The Independent Living Centre is located in Newport and offers free and
impartial advice to Island residents to help them find out about the aids for
daily living that could enhance their lives and enable them to continue to
live independently at home. Although the centre doesn’t sell anything its
staff will signpost people to where they can get the aids they need, most
often this will be the Red Cross who can provide an equipment loan for 3
months. The ILC works in conjunction with St Marys Hospital OT dept
An OT is based at the centre to assess people with additional needs. The
Blue Badge Clinic are held at the ILC twice a week on Tuesday and
Thursday afternoons. NHS staff, Physio and Occupational therapists assess
for a Blue Badge. There are designated parking bays for visitors to the
centre.

Age UK IW have a Prostate Cancer Care Navigator who can support
