GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE JOB DESCRIPTION POST TITLE: Forensic Intelligence Researcher DEPARTMENT/DIVISION/BRANCH: Crime, Forensic Services SECTION/UNIT: Forensic Identification Services Section GRADE: E RESPONSIBLE TO: Forensic Performance Analyst RESPONSIBLE FOR: N/A AIM OF JOB: To design and undertake a variety of forensically related research and evaluation projects To interrogate computerised and hard copy data in order to collate intelligence that may assist in the identification of evidence recovered from crime scenes thereby contributing to the detection of crime To research and analyse the outcomes of intelligence generated from fingerprint identifications, DNA hits and footwear matches in order to better direct Branch and Force activity towards improved performance in terms of the detection of crime To assist in the collection, collation and dissemination of Branch data and to assist in the research, analysis and presentation of such data as directed by line management MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To plan, research and analyse all types of forensic evidence in order to establish their contribution to primary detections and other associated detections, including TIC’s. To have responsibility for the preparation and presentation of written reports, statistical and diagrammatical charts, providing an accurate visual display of information and intelligence data, using recognised investigative analysis techniques. Forensic Intelligence Researcher September 2008 To create, develop and maintain local and Force computerised intelligence databases and indices in order to produce statistical information on the outcomes of Fingerprint Identifications, DNA Hits, Footwear Matches and other Branch intelligence as requested, primarily from Volume Crime. To prepare regular summaries of scientific outputs and their outcomes for the information of the senior management team. To be fully conversant with GMP’s computer systems and information technology including graphic software packages pertinent to analytical processes. To design questionnaires, interview schedules and to prepare correspondence. To prepare and deliver reports, presentations and briefings to Branch and Unit management teams, Divisional Commanders and Operational Policing Units in order to promote and market Branch services and share performance data. To liaise with and attend meetings involving GMP Divisional Commanders, and other GMP personnel in order to ascertain the impact of Forensic Services Branch outputs on the detection of crime, such outputs primarily relating to Fingerprint and DNA. To maintain good working relationships with GMP Divisional Commanders, FIB, other police forces, the Serious and Organised Crime Agency and other relevant bodies in order to facilitate the efficient and effective exchange of information. To liaise with Branch management, National Police Improvement Agency and the Home Office in order to collate National returns. To attend conferences, seminars and workshops in order to remain conversant with new or up to date legislation and to develop and progress current analytical techniques. To maintain the security and confidentiality of all intelligence handled and ensure that its retention and disclosure complies with relevant legislation and national and local policies relating to the dissemination of intelligence. To manage several complex projects simultaneously, ensuring that managers are kept informed of progress. To ensure compliance with statutory requirements in relation to information management including the Data Protection Act 1998, the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Code of Practice on Management of Police Information 2005, as appropriate. Conversant with Microsoft Office, with a good working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Word. TRAINING/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Essential Desirable Carried out duties involving research and analysis tasks, including inputting, recording and retrieving of information. Worked in an analytical environment. Creation of databases and production of statistical charts. Carried out complex/diverse research projects. Involved in the interpretation and presentation of reports and statistical data. Designed questionnaires and conducted/ evaluated surveys. Keyboard experience and a knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages. (Training will be given in the use of internal systems, application of procedures etc.). Designed and produced Crystal Reports. Conversant with Lotus SmartSuite. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Essential Desirable Has achieved a good attendance record.
