Due to exceptional pre-monsoon heavy rains during the second week of August 2011 in Southern Sindh,a large area has been filled under water including health facilities,schools, streets,houses,crops and majority of the buildings in the cities and villeges thus encroaching at least five districts where emergency has already been declared by the government of Pakistan. These districts include Tandu Muhammad Khan, Badeen, Thathha,Therparker and Umer koat. An estimated 2.5 million people in southern Sindh have been affected by the pitiless heavy rains which further compromised their lives, health and shelter with loss of livestocks and crops, the only source of income for majority of the innates. Apart from second displacement in the adjacent year, majority of the flood affected have high risks of house hold accidents due to poorly constructed and stagnant water affected slummy houses and huts in the villeges and towns. These rains are causing significant health impact among affected communities with high risks of outbreaks of water/vector born diseases, other communcable diseases, nutritional disorders , poor MnCH services as well as sexual and reproductive health problems. WASH awareness activities including distribution of hygiene kits, IEC campaigns for awareness about warter/vector born diseases, communicable diseases, nutritional disorders and other MnCH and reproductive health related issues and challenges in the catchment areas of both the hospitals mentioned Page 5 of 5
