The headquarters town of Cuttack is the oldest and largest business centre of the State. It is well connected to all other districts of the state as well as to other States through roads and railways. In ancient times Cuttack was the capital city of mourya dynasty and even after independence it was capital of Orissa State for a petty long period. After shifting of State capital to Bhubaneswar, it is now regarded as business and financial capital of the Orissa State. Cuttack district being glorious with having its oldest educational institutions of the state like Revenshaw college, MS law college, Chirst college, SCB medical college, Bhubanananda School of Engineering, have given birth of renowned scientists,doctors,engineers,administrators,politicians,industrialists,technocrats and good entrepreneurs of the State. It is a pioneer district of the State in all the fields of social and economic development. It’s industrial culture is predominating since time immemorial due it’s traditional culture of handicrafts, horn works and cottage industries. Cuttack District acts as a proto of State’s industrialization with mushroom growth of tiny and small scale industries in its semi urban and rural areas. The development of industrial culture among its citizens and growing industrialization of the district in different sectors of industries are in progressive trend as presented below. (A)Handicraft Sector The district has rich tradition of handicraft and cottage industries. The artisans of the district have been crowned with glory of manufacturing world class handicraft products. Cuttack is famous for silver filigree throughout the country. The industrial culture on manufacture of handicraft goods have been evolved since seventeenth century. Particularly silver filigree, horn works, patta chitra and dokhra casting were recognized during British rule. It recollects the then industrial culture of the people of Cuttack.
