Exercise 2.11 Read the following source. It is an extract from a newspaper article that was written in 1998. The Cootamundra Girls’ Home was a notorious ‘training’ institution for Aboriginal girls who had been taken from their families to be “assimilated” into white society – mainly by grooming them to start work as domestic servants at 15. Source: Jopson D, ‘Home ties’, Sydney Morning Herald, 19 May 1998, p 13. The newspaper extract was written in 1998. It describes the Cootamundra Girls’ Home that was in operation from 1911 until 1969. It is secondary evidence. On your own paper, write a newspaper article as it would have been written in 1911 about the opening of the Cootamundra Training Home for Girls. Your article should be 4-6 paragraphs in length and don’t forget to include a headline for the article. This would be an excellent opportunity to use your computer skills to produce the newspaper article. Part 2 Aboriginal Peoples 1
