Objectives/Goals
1. Using Windows Explorer, locate a file within a directory hierarchy when given the
path. (if you give a path such as C:\Windows\Temp, the student will locate the file
in the correct directory)
2. Describe the difference between program file types and data file types
3. Students will be able to find course related documents and use communication tools
on Blackboard site.
Your Preparation
Read the lecture notes and PowerPoint notes files to identify the content being presented.
Read pages 1-64 of the Microsoft Office text and be prepared to assist students who need
assistance with these skills.
Post the Skills Checklists, PowerPoint presentation, and Word Assignment to your
Blackboard site.
General Information
Students who didn’t do the pretest last week should do that outside of class this week.
Spend some time on the blackboard, if you did not have enough time on Week 1.
Assignments
The Word Project should be assigned to the students – be sure you understand it before
assigning it.
Suggested Lesson Plan
1. Take roll, give any announcements, get computers started, etc. (5-10 minutes)
2. Present and discuss FileStructure PowerPoint presentation – File types, file hierarchy,
Explorer, hands-on exercise. (15-20 minutes)

3. Begin Word instruction using the Word Skills Checklist as a beginning point. Based on
the results of the pretest you can use the Microsoft Office Text – Microsoft Word, pages
1-64 if you desire, or have students begin working on their own. Circulate through the
class to assist students as needed. It would be good to show them some of the basic
features in word based on the Word Skill Checklist (20-30 minutes)
4. Refer students to blackboard site for the word project. Answer questions if any. Remind
students to bring at least one floppy disk to class next week. Also remind students about
the Quiz 1 on File Structures next week.
