This course involves 50 minutes of in class instruction for each credit hour per week, and a minimum of two hours of out of class assignments each week for 15 weeks. To master the material covered in this course it is expected that the student will spend a minimum of two hours per week per credit hour on the out of classroom assignments. Required Course Text No Book – Readings will be assigned periodically; see Course Schedule Course Description Industrial / Organizational Psychology concerns the study of human behavior as it is related to work. This course will cover personnel issues (e.g., job analysis, employee selection, performance evaluation, and employee training/development), worker issues (e.g., motivations, attitudes, and stress), and organizational issues (e.g., communication, group processes, and leadership). This class is recommended for anyone who aspires to work in management, but anyone who plans on working (like, ever, in your life) will benefit from this course. Course Format The lectures will follow the outline at the end of this document. Occasional pop quizzes in class will yield extra credit points toward exams. Class time will consist primarily of lectures and discussions. Because of the extensive in-class involvement, class attendance is strongly encouraged and expected. If you are unable to attend class you should not take this course. Textbook and Assignments Your assignment will be to master the material presented in the assigned readings and the lectures. The lectures are intended to supplement the material presented in the readings. Thus students are responsible for all reading material whether it is discussed in class or not. Students are also expected to attend class regularly and are responsible for material covered in lecture whether it is covered in the readings or not. You will be tested on the readings and the lecture material on three midterm exams and one final exam. 1 Grading Course grades will be based upon scores on three midterms and one final exam. Each midterm will contain 50 multiple choice questions and the comprehensive final will contain 100 multiple choice questions. The total score in the course will be out of these 250 possible points. The following grading rubric is strictly used for the assignment of a final course letter grade: A = 90%+ A- = 86-89% B+ = 82-85% B = 78-81% B- = 74-77% C+ = 70-73% C = 66-69% C- = 62-65% D+ = 58-61% D = 54-57% D- = 51-53% F = 50% or less Course Policies 1. Students are expected to attend class on a regular basis and to be responsible for material presented in class, whether or not this material is covered in the readings. 2. Make-up exams will only be given for documented medical or emergency reasons, or for prior scheduled FAU athletic contests or religious observances. For medical or emergency reasons, the student must make every effort to contact the instructor as soon as possible with an explanation. Delays in contacting the instructor or a lack of medical documentation will result in no possibility of a make-up exam (see policy 4). 3. If a student misses a midterm exam for reasons other than confirmed medical reasons, the missing score will be assigned the average score of his or her two other exams minus (-) 10%. If a student misses more than one midterm exam, a score of 0 points will be assigned, regardless of prior course performance. If the midterm is missed for a confirmed medical reason it may be made-up (see policy 3) or may be scored as the average of the other two midterms at the instructor’s discretion. This policy does not apply to the Final Exam which must be taken to pass the course. 4. Occasional in-class extra credit quizzes will be added as whole percentage points to the student’s score on a subsequent exam (after the exam score). Academic Integrity Plagiarism, cheating and other violations will not be tolerated. Violations will be subject to severe penalties in accordance with FAU procedures (e.g., receiving an “F” for the course and/or expulsion from the University). Please see http://www.fau.edu/ctl/AcademicIntegrity.php for more information including the FAU code of academic integrity: http://www.fau.edu/ctl/4.001_Code_of_Academic_Integrity.pdf. Students with Disabilities It is the responsibility of students with disabilities to inform the instructor within the first week of the session of the need for reasonable accommodation of their disabilities. Students are advised to seek assistance from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) on campus (see http://www.osd.fau.edu/ for more information). As soon as the need for accommodation is determined by OSD and the need is communicated to the instructor by OSD, reasonable accommodations will be made. 2 Lecture Schedule* Week Date Topic 8/18 Overview of Course 8/20 What is I/O Psychology? 8/25 People 2 8/27 Personality 101 9/1 Job Analysis 3 9/3 Vocations, Interests, & Values 9/8 Assessing & Selecting Employees I – Methods 4 9/10 Assessing & Selecting Employees II – Validity 9/15 Assessing & Selecting Employees III – Practice 5 9/17 Midterm 1 9/22 Evaluating Employee Performance 6 9/24 Evaluating Employee Performance 9/29 Employee Training & Development 7 10/1 Personal Training & Development 10/6 Compensation, Attrition, & Worker Well-being 8 10/8 Worker Stress & Negative Employee Behavior 10/13 Teams & Group Processes 9 10/15 Personality & Team Performance 10/20 Midterm 2 10 10/22 Organizational Communication 10/27 Organizational Theory 11 10/29 Leadership 11/3 The Dark Side of Leadership 12 11/5 Assessing and Developing Leadership 11/10 Versatile Leadership 13 11/12 Ulzana’s Raid 11/17 Discussion of Ulzana’s Raid 14 11/19 Midterm 3 11/24 Final Exam Review 15 11/26 Thanksgiving – No Class Meeting 12/8 16 Final Exam (7:45AM to 10:15AM) (Tuesday) *Subject to change at instructor’s discretion. 1 Assignment Syllabus Values Test Personality Test Job Analysis Ch.
