About SolarAid
We believe that the two most important threats facing humanity today are climate change and
global poverty. SolarAid was launched in 2006 as a response to this and already has programmes
in Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya and South America.
SolarAid is an innovative and fast-growing charity that aims to enable the world’s poorest
people to have clean, renewable power. Solar power leads to better education, health, safety
and income by allowing poor communities to cook, pump water, run fridges, store vaccines,
light homes, schools, clinics and businesses, power computers and homes, farm more
effectively, and much more.
SolarAid carries out micro solar projects, training people to market and distribute small scale
solar devices to power radios, LED lights and mobile phones and also installs solar systems on
community centres, medical clinics, schools and other such communal infrastructure. As
SolarAid grows, it will educate and influence the public and policy makers on issues related to
renewable energy and climate change and their impact on the world’s poorest people.
Our micro solar projects are done under the brand name Sunny Money, which works as a
microfranchise in East and Southern Africa. We are raising social investment to finance its scaleup.
We were set up with backing from Solarcentury, the UK’s largest solar company (which
donates 5% of its net profit to SolarAid), and Christian Aid, which funded part of our first project
in Malawi.
Our aim is to become the charity of choice for the solar industry, drawing upon its human
and financial resources for volunteers and funding. Our patrons are Cherie Blair the actress Cate
Blanchett and we are already building strong support from a wide variety of major donors,
trusts, companies and other donors.
SolarAid is not your typical charity. We have strong links with a range of companies and
aspire to combine the efficiency of the commercial sector with the social commitment of the
voluntary sector. We therefore seek candidates who are entrepreneurial, dedicated, and totally
professional.
