For example, Our Deputy Grand Knight, Tim Mullen, has facilitated the judging the Poster and Essay contests, which were open to all Holy Family children. I understand the judging was very difficult and the results are reported elsewhere in this newsletter. We also, under the leadership of our Worthy Chancellor, Marcus Bach, held our Council 13123 Free Throw Contest in Meilinger Center on January 25th. The participants, family members and Knight volunteers all had a great time. The winners are listed also in this newsletter and are eligible to participate in the District 48 Free Throw Contest scheduled for February 8th in the Meilinger Center. Best wishes to all the contestants and thank you to Tim Mullen, Marcus Bach and the Knight volunteers for their service. On February 18th, we celebrate Ash Wednesday. As we enter the Lenten season, why not participate in the Council 13123 Symbolon Series. It is not too late to join in the study of our Catholic faith and you can catch up on-line. See the input in this newsletter for more details. Also, Lent would be a wonderful time to recruit additional members for the Council. We have a lot to offer and invite all members to participate where possible. Please recruit gentlemen from your family and friends to join us is serving God, the church and our community. Yours fraternally, Bob Tetzloff, Grand Knight HONORS December Knight Family of the Month Sam Di Raimondo, along with his wife Patricia (Pat), has contributed much to the Knights of Columbus, the church and community for over fifty-six (56) years. It is with great pleasure that Council 13123 honors Sam and Pat Di Raimondo as Knight Family of the Month. December Knight of the Month As a newly inducted Knight, Matt Stewart has impressed from the start. Matt is currently spending a year volunteering with The Culture Project. The Culture Project International is an initiative of young people set out to restore culture through the experience of virtue, proclaiming the dignity of the human person and the richness of living sexual integrity. Members make a commitment of at least one year of their life to enter into a program in which they themselves live and pray in community, receive formation and are sent out on mission nationally and internationally, giving presentations to youth about the dignity of the human person and about sexual integrity. Prior to Matt’s involvement with The Culture Project, he attended and graduated from the Franciscan University of Steubenville and is contemplating medical school after his volunteer year. Matt also graduated from Boylan High School in Rockford, where he was active in many Holy Family Parish February 2015 Knights of Columbus News school activities. Council 13123 is honored in naming Matt Stewart as Knight of the Month. BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH/SYMBOLON Supreme has developed a program for strengthening families and building up our faith. All Knights and families are encouraged to participate in this program, which extends into June. Details on the various session times may be found in the parish bulletin. Plan now to join the sessions. You can review prior sessions by going on-line to the Symbolon site. Monthly Meditation on Family Life Whoever is moved by love begins to perceive what "life" really is. He begins to perceive the meaning of the word of hope that we encountered in the Baptismal Rite: from faith I await "eternal life" - the true life which, whole and unthreatened, in all its fullness, is simply life. Jesus, who said that he had come so that we might have life and have it in its fullness, in abundance, has also explained to us what "life" means: "this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent" (John 17:3). Life in its true sense is not something we have exclusively in or from ourselves: it is a relationship. And life in its totality is a relationship with him who is the source of life. If we are in relation with him who does not die, who is Life itself and Love itself, then we are in life. Then we "live." Pope Benedict XVI Spe Salve, §7 On an evening together share the meditation and questions. 1. How would our family life be different if we did not love at all? 2. In what areas has the faith and God's love shown me how to love? 3. Why is living in relationship with God so important to really "living"? KNIGHTS IN ACTION THANK YOU! PRO-LIFE San Francisco Archbishop responds to Pelosi: ‘No Catholic can dissent in good conscience’ on abortion. SAN FRANCISCO, January 26, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) - After House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi repeatedly refused to say last week whether an unborn child at 20 weeks is a “human being,” her Archbishop in San Francisco has responded by insisting that “no Catholic can dissent in good conscience” on abortion. Holy Family Parish February 2015 Knights of Columbus News CNS News posed the question to Pelosi on January 22 in light of debate in the House of Representatives on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would ban abortions after 20 weeks except in cases of rape, incest, and a threat to the life of the mother. Twice Pelosi refused to say whether an unborn child at 20 weeks is a “human being.” She stated: “As a mother of five, in six years, I have great standing on this issue, great understanding of it, more than my colleagues.” She added that she knows more about “having babies” than even the pope. After her remarks, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone told CNS News that both science and Catholic teaching on the issue is clear. "It is a scientific fact that human life begins at conception," he said. "This has been established in medical science for over 100 years. Catholic moral teaching acknowledges this scientific fact, and has always affirmed the grave moral evil of taking an innocent human life.” “This has been the consistent teaching of the Church from the very beginning, a teaching already discernible in the natural moral law, and so a teaching from which no Catholic can dissent in good conscience,” he added. Pastors, he said, have an “obligation … to reach out to their people who have difficulty understanding and accepting such important teachings of the Church in order to extend to them true pastoral care and, where appropriate, to establish a regular dialogue.” As a Priest and Bishop, including now as the Archbishop of San Francisco, I ask for people’s prayers for success as I continue to strive to do this,” he said. May we suggest the following prayer written by Archbishop Fulton Sheen: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the preborn child that I have spiritually adopted, who is in danger of abortion. I have named my child: Baby ______ KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FIELD AGENT NEWS Long Term Care Did you know the average stay in a nursing home lasts three (3) years.
