1 Coastal areas experience cooler day temperatures compared to areas further
inland.
Name the wind responsible for this.
Draw an annotated diagram to explain its formation. (remember to use a pencil, box it
[4]
and include a title)
cool winds blow from to sea, cooling
coastal temperatures during the day
2 Draw an annotated diagram to explain the formation of relief rain.

Northern hemisphere is having winter
Cold air contracts, sinks and creates a high pressure area
Southern hemisphere is having summer
Warm air expands, rises and creates a low pressure area
o
Winds blow out form high pressure area in Central Asia to the low pressure area over
the adjacent seas and the equatorial low pressure area
They arrive in North China and Japan as NORTHWEST MONSOON and South China
and Southeast Asia as NORTHEAST MONSOON
Since the low pressure area in Australia is more intense, the winds continue to head for
Australia
o

o
As soon as the Northeast monsoon winds reach the equator, it deflects to the left to
become NORTHWEST MONSOON winds for Australia. These winds are drawn towards
the low pressure areas of Australia.




As the winds blow out of Asia towards Australia, they blow over the South
China Sea, they pick up moisture and bring rain to Malaysia. (NE Monsoon),
hence KL gets a lot of rain in October to December
But the winds that blow out of India are dry. So India receives little rain from
this monsoon.
Hence Bangalore receives only 22 mm of rain compared to 220mm rain for
KL in December.
