Evening Courses

The American Language Program at The Ohio State University offers English courses for those who
want to improve their English skills but who cannot study English full-time every weekday.
GENERAL INFORMATION
 Evenings, on the Ohio State University Columbus campus
 Length: Courses meet 5 hours per week for 5 weeks
 Fees: $375 (includes all books and related materials)
 Small class size (8-12 students), with an emphasis on communication, in-class practice, and
individual attention
 Classes are non-credit; a certificate is awarded for successful completion of each course
 Instructors have advanced training and extensive experience
 Courses will be canceled if enrollment is low (fees will be refunded in full)

Improving Speaking Skills: Pronunciation
Review the critical areas of English pronunciation. Learn about and practice the essential elements of
spoken English — vowel and consonant pronunciation, intonation, linking and blending, word stress,
sentence stress, and reductions.

Proficiency level: Intermediate to advanced
Fee: $375
Improving Speaking Skills: Making Presentations
Develop your ability to make effective presentations in English. Review the strategies that can
improve your formal speaking skills. This class will provide you the opportunity to practice making
speeches and presentations, with helpful feedback from the instructor.

Proficiency level: Intermediate to advanced
Fee: $375
TOEFL Preparation: Listening and Writing
Prepare for the Computer-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). This course will
cover listening strategies and the fundamentals of essay sitting.

Proficiency level: Intermediate to advanced
Fee: $375
TOEFL Preparation: Grammar and Reading
Prepare for the Computer-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). This course will
cover the grammatical structures and usage rules commonly tested by the TOEFL, and strategies to
improve reading speed and comprehension.

Proficiency level: Intermediate to advanced

English Grammar Review: Focus on Tenses
Review the full range of English verb tenses and modals, -with an emphasis on correct usage in both
writing and speech.

NOTE: No class on November 11 and 27; class will be held on November 12.
Proficiency level: Intermediate to advanced
Fee: $375
English Grammar Review: Focus on Clauses
Review and practice English clause structure to make your communication in English more accurate
and sophisticated: independent clauses, dependent clauses (adjectival, noun, and adverbial), and
gerunds and infinitives.

Proficiency level: Intermediate to advanced
Fee: $375
General English
Take your English to the next level. Intermediate General English provides instruction in all language
skills: listening, speaking, reading, -writing, grammar, and vocabulary. This class is designed for those
-who have an elementary to intermediate proficiency in English and -who are ready to become more
sophisticated speakers of English. Through extensive practice in class, participants will develop both
greater fluency and accuracy in the use of English and expand their understanding of English
vocabulary.

Improving Writing Skills: Focus on Sentences and Paragraphs
Review the essentials of-writing clear and effective sentences and paragraphs. You -will practice using
English vocabulary and grammar as -well as basic organizational techniques to improve your written
English.

Proficiency level: Elementary to intermediate
Fee: $375
Vocabulary Development: Words and Idioms for Everyday Life
Expand your English vocabulary. Study and practice words and idiomatic expressions that are used in
our everyday living. This course will help you improve your listening skills as well as your speaking
and writing.
