Cemetery Policy
It is the policy of Coleford Town Council to create and maintain a
respectful and dignified environment, which is sympathetic both to the
landscape and to the people who visit loved ones at their place of rest.
Our Commitment
The Council will seek to ensure that sufficient cemetery space is available within the
parish for new graves for those members of our community who prefer burial to
cremation by
 Purchasing additional land if necessary
 Ensuring the land available is used efficiently
 Retaining the option to re-use plots over 100 years old
The Council will ensure compliance with legislative requirements by
 Ensuring the Sexton implements NAMM standards
 All Memorial Masons comply with NAMM standards
 Coleford Town Council complies with current legislation of Local Authorities
Cemetery Order.
The Council is committed to ensuring the needs of the bereaved within the whole
community are given equal consideration and appreciation.
The Council will seek to conserve and enhance the natural, cultural and historic
features of the cemetery as part of the heritage of the Parish by
 Restoring and preserving historic graves
 Restoring and preserving the War Graves
 Promoting a natural wildlife area
 Providing composting facilities
 Maintaining the flora and fauna in an environmentally friendly way
The Council is committed to providing the opportunity for the bereaved within the
community to commemorate their loved ones in an appropriate manner by
 Permitting the installation of headstones and memorials
 Permitting the installation of memorial benches in areas designated by Coleford
Town Council, subject to availability of space within the cemetery.
 Providing a well maintained and tranquil environment
 Providing a natural burial area
The Council will encourage the use of the cemetery for educational purposes by
 Working in partnership with local schools, colleges and youth groups
 Maintaining an accurate digitised database record
 Providing literature
