Students will become familiar with basic digital photography, layout, and the elements of design, as well as writing articles, headlines, and captions. Students will practice making informed decisions with respect to libel, right to privacy, and general journalistic ethics. Classroom Policies and Procedures: Students are expected to: Be on time. Be prepared to work on their assignment for yearbook. Anticipate current and upcoming deadlines. Assist other students with their pages if they have completed their pages for current deadline and there is a pressing deadline that needs to be met. Take pictures, take pictures, take pictures. Upload pictures, upload pictures, upload pictures. Work on pages outside of class time. Stay late during deadlines for submission if needed. Computer Use Policy: Reiterating the school’s computer use policy that is already in place, computers are to be used in the classroom for educational purposes only. With this in mind, the computer use during class time is for yearbook related work only. Cruising around the Internet, emailing, chatting/instant messaging, downloading/listening to music, video, etc. is not allowed. Grading Procedures: Grades will be issued based on a point/percentage system. Each assignment will be given a point value. Grades will be given out based on the following scale: Grade A AB+ B Percentage 93-100% 90-92% 87-89% 83-86% Grade BC+ C C- Percentage 80-82% 77-79% 73-76% 70-72% Grade D+ D DF Percentage 67-69% 63-66% 60-62% Below 60% Deadlines: Completing assignments and submitting pages on time is crucial to yearbook production. Late submission of pages will cause a large reduction in grade. When deadlines are due students will be expected to spend additional time/days in class to complete pages for submission. Attendance: Regular attendance is important in order to be on top of deadlines. Excessive absences will negatively affect a student’s grade in this class. Students are expected to notify instructor before class if they are to be absent. A note from parents is expected like any other class. While it is understandable that students are involved in other activities after school, they have committed to taking on the responsibility of yearbook and are expected to be in class. We are committed to be inclusive, objective and accurate in producing our yearbook. Assignments Each student will be assigned a designed number of yearbook pages each deadline to be completed. Students will be responsible to create the layouts, photography the event, write the copy, and proof their work. Deadlines are critical as it can result in fines or delay of delivery if they are not met. Late assignments WILL result in a lower grade or a zero for the assignment. Social Media Policy Students may submit photos to yearbook staff via social media. By submitting photos the student is agreeing to have photos printed in the school yearbook. If filters are added they must be labeled “photo illustration.” Identify the photographer when submitting photos. Obituary Policy Any current student, staff, or faculty member who dies during the year will be recognized in the yearbook. If the person dies after the yearbook has been submitted they will be recognized in the supplement. Information and permission will first be obtained from the deceased’s family before publishing any information regarding cause of death. The yearbook staff will treat all deaths in a respectful manner. Camera Students are encouraged to bring their own cameras but personal equipment needs to labeled and locked up when not in use. The school is not responsible for loss, theft, or damage. Students may check out school cameras and are responsible to pay for loss or damage. If student plans to borrow school cameras the student and parent must sign the “Student Media Equipment Acceptable Use Agreement.” Thereafter, students must sign out for cameras and return them in a timely manner for other staff members to check out if needed. Removal from staff/class: Reasons a student can be removed from the yearbook staff include but are not limited to the following: Violations of the Society of Professional Journalist Code of Ethics Consistent late or missing assignments Consistent failure to turn in quality work Abuse of yearbook privilege to cover events during the school day
