NEW ROTATION PROBLEM: ROTATION 6: 7TH GRADE – Strategy: Draw a Diagram p. 20 – THE POOL DECK Curly used a shovel to dig his own swimming pool. He figured he needed a pool because digging it was hard work and he could use it to cool off after working on it all day. He also planned to build a rectangular concrete deck around the pool that would be 6 feet wide at all points. The pool is rectangular and measures 14 feet by 40 feet. What is the area of the deck? 8th GRADE – Strategy: Matrix Logic P. 113 #3 – Cabinet Members The president was discussing some politics with the vice president and three of her cabinet members: the secretaries of state, education, and the treasury. Using the clues from the conversation below, determine which woman (one is named Norma) holds which position. Paula said, “Ms. President, I don’t think the secretary of state knows what she is talking about. I think foreign policy has really deteriorated lately.” The secretary of state shook her head. So did the vice president. The secretary of treasury said, “I agree with Paula. We haven’t even talked to Japan lately.” The vice president jumped in. “Will you two leave Inez alone? She is doing a fine job.” Georgianne, who had been silent so far, finally said, “Okay, let’s get on to something else.” The secretary of education said, “I’m sorry, Inez. Nothing personal.” Colleen said, “I’m sorry too, Inez. I guess we just got carried away.” Inez replied, “That’s okay. I know we’ve all been under a lot of stress lately.” 9th GRADE – Strategy: Unit Analysis P. 243 FASTBALL Nolan Ryan has been clocked throwing a baseball 100 miles per hour. At that speed, how much time does the batter have to react? (How much time before the ball reaches the plate?) The pitcher’s mound is 60 feet 6 inches from home plate. 10th GRADE – Strategy: Work Backwards P. 347 SNICKERDOODLES Sandy has some snickerdoodles to give to all her friends as Christmas gifts. She gave 25 to the little elves. She then gave 1/5 of her remaining snickerdoodles to Santa Claus. She gave 9 to each of the nine reindeer (don’t forget them, especially not Rudolph). Sandy gave 71 to Mrs. Claus because poor Mrs. Claus had no idea what to give her friends for Christmas. Then Sandy ate 1/3 of the remaining snickerdoodles. Next, she gave 1/8 of her remaining cookies to her best friend in Toronto, and she gave 20 more to Mrs. Claus, who hadn’t had enough to give to all her friends. When Sandy was all done giving, she had 15 cookies left, which she gave to Frosty the Snowman. How many snickerdoodles did Sandy have to begin with? 11TH GRADE – Strategy: Systematic Lists P.83#2 DANCING IN P.E. Miss Von Thaden tried very hard to make sure that nobody was left out during the PE classes in which her students danced. She thought she had a correct head count, so she told them to pair up. This didn’t work because there was one person left out. She then told them to get into groups of five, but this didn’t work either because again there was one person left over. So she tried setting up groups of three, but unfortunately there was one left over. Finally, she decided to try groups of four. Again there was one person left out. There are less than 80 students in the dance class. How many were present on that particular day? 12TH GRADE p.227#3 COMPANY BARBECUE Before ordering food for a company barbecue, the president took a poll. She asked people if they would eat the ribs, hamburgers, and corn at the barbecue. She polled 64 people in the company that said they would probably attend. This poll revealed that 59 members would eat ribs, 56 would eat corn, 60 would eat hamburgers, 55 would eat ribs and corn, 54 would eat corn and hamburgers, 56 would eat ribs and hamburgers, and 53 would eat all three. a. How many people did not want any of these foods? b. How many people would eat ribs but not corn? c. How many people would eat something so long as it was not a hamburger? d. How many people would eat only corn? e. How many people would eat exactly two foods?
