Royal College of Music Job Description Identifying factors Post title Research Associate in Performance Science: Participatory Music Education Grade 8 Reporting to Head of Centre for Performance Science Job purpose and major tasks The Research Associate in Performance Science: Participatory Music Education undertakes research and teaching within the Centre for Performance Science (CPS). S/he is particularly responsible for conducting research and project management of the AHRC-funded project Creative Practice as Mutual Recovery: Connecting Communities for Mental Health and Wellbeing, developing and leading research into participatory music education and teaching and/or supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students working in the field of Performance Science. Research activity 1. To take responsibility for day-to-day project management of the music work package in the multi-site project Creative Practice as Mutual Recovery, including organising music-making interventions in healthcare settings, leading participant recruitment and liaison, organising project events, and working closely with project partners 2. To take a lead role in conducting research into the impacts of participatory music education, including writing research ethics submissions, developing research protocols, collecting and analysing research data 3. To disseminate research through reports, and as appropriate, journal publications and presentations at academic conferences 4. To undertake self-supervised scholarly activity and to report on this in general terms as part of the annual appraisal process 5. To collaborate with other colleagues in relevant research and, where appropriate, support colleagues in their research 6. To contribute to external funding bids for research projects as coinvestigator Teaching, marking and examining 7. To teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, delivering lectures, tutorials and supervisions in the area of Performance Science during the teaching and examining weeks of the College’s year 8. To engage in scholarly updating, marking, and preparation of teaching syllabi and materials throughout the College’s year External links and updating 9. To establish and maintain contact with those researching in his or her area in other institutions, or as individuals, and to contribute to the development of understanding in the area across the UK HE sector and, where appropriate, the international research community 10. To inform those colleagues working in related areas, and the College in general, about developments in the area, nationally and internationally Other duties 11. To undertake such other duties as may be requested by the Professor of Performance Science Personal qualities, skills and experience needed Essential PhD (or equivalent work experience) in a relevant subject Track record as a researcher in Performance Science or a related field, with expertise in the conduct of quantitative and/or qualitative research and analysis of research findings Musical experience or, in the case of scientifically-organised appointments, possessing a keen understanding of music Proven ability to organise and manage creative projects, with experience of project management Proven ability to produce high quality publications/reports and other forms of dissemination, including experience of presentation at national/international conferences A strong interest in the arts and creative therapies and/or participatory music education, and an ability to work effectively in healthcare and educational settings Ability to think analytically and strategically, with well developed interpersonal and team-working skills Ability to identify opportunities for research funding and to prepare/ contribute to the preparation of high quality research bids Ability to work diligently and achieve objectives Computer literacy Desirable Successful experience in obtaining external funding for research projects Teaching and examining experience in HE at undergraduate and postgraduate level, preferably including experience of postgraduate, including doctoral, supervision Experience/professional qualifications in mental health or social care Previous leadership experience on a major research project, preferably in the area of participatory music education An enhanced CRB check is required for this post
