NEWMAN GARRISON + PARTNERS ARCHITECTURAL FIRM ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF MASTER PLANNING AND URBAN DESIGN STUDIO FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 17, 2009 Contact: Sheri Gailliard Phone: 949-756-0818 sgailliard@nggpartners.com NEWPORT BEACH, CA – Newman Garrison + Partners architectural firm has expanded its master planning and urban design studio with the addition of two senior planning and landscape architecture executives to the firm’s professional staff. Headquartered in Newport Beach, CA, Newman Garrison + Partners is an architecture and land-planning firm with a successful history that includes more than 75 years of combined experience and the design of more than 500,000 residential units in urban and suburban locations worldwide. Kevin Newman, CEO of Newman Garrison + Partners, announced that Michael Doty and Glenn Taylor, both previously with Irvine, CA – based PBR, a planning, design and environmental research firm, have joined Newman Garrison to lead the planning and design studio, which will concentrate on community planning and urban and resort design nationally and internationally. Newman said the decision to expand his firm at this time is the result of extensive due diligence he and his staff have undertaken over the past several months to get a better “boots-on-the-ground” read on the health of the regional housing markets by meeting with both builders and city planners. For the first time since the beginning of the year, he says he sees meaningful signals that both the economy and housing markets are improving. “As the housing market continues to stabilize, we see signs of recovery on the horizon that we believe will begin to reinvigorate the land development industry as landowners start to plan their sites for development within the next 2-3 years,” Newman said. “Another reason for expanding the community design studio now is the availability of such great professional talent as Mike and Glenn. We are confident that with their leadership, our community design studio will be ahead of the land development curve that we see coming, and they will bring their knowledge and expertise to our firm at precisely the right time for us to take advantage of new opportunities as the real estate industry rebounds.” Although his firm is currently focused primarily on the design of mixed-use and residential development in urban locations, Newman said he expects the scope of work to broaden as the housing markets improve to include development on the edge of urban areas as well as increasing opportunities for community and resort development in the U.S. and worldwide. Additionally, he said his firm will establish landscape architecture and interior design studios in the near future. “Our goal is to be a full-service, fully integrated design firm with the highest caliber of professional capabilities for every aspect of development from land planning to interior design,” Newman said. “As we look to the future, we believe land developers and builders will want to consolidate and streamline the planning and design processes to achieve greater efficiencies and to promote optimum collaboration among the creative talents that design their projects. Gone are the days when multiple planning and design firms are retained by a client to work on a single project. We believe the new model will be a developer or builder retaining a single firm to work on several projects.” Formerly executive vice president of PBR, Doty has extensive experience in all facets of planning for master-planned communities, resorts, new towns, residential subdivisions, commercial centers, business and industrial parks, and mixed-use projects. An expert in site analysis and identifying opportunities for community development, he is an accomplished leader in program development and project management. Doty has directed numerous highly visible, large-scale community planning projects in the U.S., Mexico and Pacific Rim countries. Doty began his career with PBR in 1971 as a landscape architect and was promoted to executive vice president of all of the firm’s design projects in 1985. Prior PBR, he was a manager of landscape architecture at Lester Walls & Associates and before that he was a community planner at The Irvine Company, one of the nation’s leading land planning and development companies and owner/developer of the Irvine Ranch in Orange County, CA. A licensed landscape architect in California and Hawaii, Doty earned a bachelor’s of science degree in landscape architecture from California Polytechnic Institute in Pomona, CA. Before joining Newman Garrison + Partners, Taylor was a senior associate at PBR. He has more than 30 years of large-scale master planning experience which spans the wide spectrum of projects from mixed-use, commercial/industrial projects to specific site planning of hillside residential developments. His experience also includes new town and planned communities, recreation resorts, special facility planning and golf course-oriented communities. Taylor’s resume encompasses some of the nation’s top planned communities and largescale, mixed-use developments. His project portfolio includes Rancho Mission Viejo in Orange County, CA, where he assisted in long-range master planning for this 42,000-acre working cattle ranch. He also participated in the strategic planning of the successful 5,000acre, 12,000-home Rancho Santa Margarita community within Rancho Mission Viejo, and provided detailed site planning studies for its 300-acre town center, 500-acre office business park, and 140-acre corporate/office complex. Taylor's most recent activities includes master planning for a new destination, lakeoriented resort community in Nebraska and the design of Riverbend Crossing a 4,000acre recreational resort community in Tunica, MS. He also has experience in international master planning, including resort and marina planning of the Costa Palma Resort in Mazatlan, Mexico and master planning of the successful, world-known Sunset Beach Resort, located in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Taylor’s career also includes planning and design positions with The Glenn Company, Newport Beach; EDAW, Irvine, CA; Vail, Speck, Taylor, Irvine; County of Orange and County of Riverside planning departments; and the City of Monterey planning department.
