UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT GROUP IRAQ TRUST FUND PROJECT DOCUMENT SUMMARY SHEET Participating UN Organisation: FAO Programme/Project Title: Restoration and modernization of fish production in Iraq Programme/Project Number: A5-15 Programme Project Description: Given the large water bodies around the project area, the high market demand for carps, the dynamic private sector, the availability of wide areas of alluvial saline soils and the feasibility of increasing production by reactivating presently non-operational farms, the project aims to support the fish sub sector in Iraq and significantly increase production from existing farms through improved and proven management and production technology. Govt of Iraq Line Ministry Responsible: MoA- Ministry of Agriculture Cluster: A Agriculture, Food Security, Environment & Natural Resources Management Programme/Project Location: Iraq; Centre /South Provinces, Baghdad, Salah Eldin, Diala, Wasit, Babylon and Kerbala governorates Programme/Project cost: US$ 7 312 177 Programme/Project Duration: Two years Development Goal : The longer term objective is to support fish production in Iraq by stimulating the resumption of fish farming in large and small scale enterprises through practical demonstrations of applicable fish farming techniques, supply at cost of fingerlings, and on-going support of an active, applied and adaptive research programme. Immediate objectives: 1. Build or restore the productive capacity to supply fish fingerlings to the commercial fish farming industry. 2. Build and restore a series of fish farming enterprises in the most needed areas in Iraq. 3. Demonstrate new lake-based fish farming methods, and initiate stocking of native carps in selected lakes. 4. Improve local capacity to manage and develop the fishery/aquaculture sector. Outputs A plan specifying all the required equipment and facilities for the proposed rehabilitation of the fish sector including established priorities for replacement 1.2 Equipment for rehabilitation specified. 1.3 Report and proposal submitted for funding continuation of research and extension for the fish industry in Iraq. 2.1 Fifteen sites selected and rehabilitated for fish farming in the most needy areas. 3.1 Established baseline information on Huweza Marsh 3.2 Pilot fish cage farms established at Huweza Marsh. 4.1 Five Iraqi scientists and 17 technicians trained in modern fish farming methods. 4.2 Extension materials developed to support the adoption of fish farming in Iraq. 4.3 Technicians, fish farmers, resource managers and local communities trained in improved fish farming methods, hatchery/nursery management, fish health and marketing. The direct beneficiaries are 1 500 small fish farmers (farms of 10 ha or less) and rural fishing communities.
