Communications from President-Elect by
Jerry Gonzales
It is a pleasure to serve on the Diablo Chapter as
President-Elect because of the consistent and
enthusiastic participation of board members. As
we begin planning for next year’s events and
programs, I appreciate the chapter’s approach to
providing diverse opportunities for membership
participation including: regular CE programs,
community-based outreach programs to school
and seniors, and Night Out with Industry
(NOWI). I look forward in transitioning the
leadership with multi-years President Teresa
Halperin.
My membership with CSHP exceeds 25yrs,
starting in the San Gabriel Valley chapter upon
graduation from UCSF. Accepted a position at
Methodist Hospital in Southern California for
operations of the IV room and new TPN service.
With this experience it led to launching Central
Pharmacy Admixture Services (CAPS). Thanks
for the support and trust of Jeff Chapman, then
director of pharmacy at the City of Hope, CAPS
was born.
My supportive wife, Diane and 2 sons moved
north to Grass Valley where I became director of
pharmacy at Sierra Nevada Hospital. I continued
my CSHP membership with the Sacramento
Valley chapter until 2004 when I moved to
Vallejo. Currently, I am director of pharmacy for
NorthBay Healthcare group in Fairfield and
Vacaville. The Diablo chapter seemed to be the
best fit in balancing networking, fun and
community service.
Night Out With Industry 2006
DSHP’s Night Out With Industry (NOWI) is
scheduled for Thursday, October 26th at the
Embassy Suites Hotel in Pleasant Hill. The
theme is Mardi Gras. This extremely successful
networking event for peers and industry will be
chaired by Denise Omen.

Officer nominations:
Have you ever sat back and wondered what can you do for our profession. Far too often we take what has been done
for us for granted. Pharmacy practice as it stands today would not be the same if not for the efforts of not only CSHP,
but more specifically the volunteers. I know what you must be saying, how can I as one voice effect change. The
answer is to start at a grass roots level, your local chapter. Better yet, the way to get really involved with the chapter is
to run for a DSHP office. What are the benefits? I was afraid you would never ask:
 Active involvement in the policy and decision making affecting our profession.
 Learn first hand about changes in pharmacy law and practice
 Network with other facilities in our area about potential opportunities
 The DSHP Board is truly a fun group and our meetings are always interesting
You do not need any prior experience to qualify for these positions and Board members would be happy to mentor you
if you’re elected. We are currently seeking nominations for the following positions:
 President-Elect
 Treasurer
 Delegates
 Director/Delegate
The DSHP Board meetings are the 3rd Tuesday each month and last approx 1.5 hours (excluding June and
December).
You may nominate yourself or someone else, either is OK.

SUMMER SAFETY
SUNBURN-What you can do: Remember to limit sun exposure, wear protective clothing and use
sunscreen. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapplied at least every 2
hours. Use water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
HEAT ILLNESS- What you can do: Air conditioning is the No. 1 protective factor against heat illness.
If you don’t have air conditioning, spend time in public facilities, such as libraries and malls that have air
conditioning. Reduce strenuous activities or do them during early mornings and evenings when it’s cooler.
If you’re outside for long stretches of time, carry a water bottle, drink fluids regularly, and don’t push your
limits. People who play sports should wear light, loose-fitting clothes and drink water or sports drinks
before, during and after activity. If you see someone experiencing heat illness, have the person lie down in
a cool place and elevate the legs. Use water, wet towels and fanning to help cool the person down until
emergency help comes.
BITES FROM MOSQUITOES AND TICKS-What you can do: There are no vaccines on the market
for West Nile virus or Lyme disease. If you’re spending time in tall grass or woody areas, use insect
repellent with DEET to ward off mosquitoes and ticks. But insect repellent should not be used on babies,
and repellent used on children should contain no more than 10 percent DEET.
BEE STINGS-What you can do: To keep bees away, wear light-colored clothing and avoid scented
soaps and perfumes. Don’t leave food, drinks and garbage out uncovered. Treat a bee sting by scraping
the stinger away in a side-to-side motion with a credit card or fingernail, and then washing the area with
soap and water. Pulling the stinger or using tweezers may push more venom into the skin. For any bug
bite or sting, ice or a cold compress and OTC pain-relieving creams or oral medications can help.
