A. abyssal plain B. trench C. shore zone D. volcano UNIT D CH 2 Summaries NAME __________________________ Lesson 1: The waters of the ocean provide fresh water for Earth through the water cycle. As water moves through this cycle, it changes from a liquid to a gas and back to a liquid through the processes of evaporation and precipitation. Sodium chloride is the most common salt in the ocean. The salts and other substances dissolved in ocean water make it denser than fresh water. Lesson 2: Ocean waves form as wind blows over the water’s surface. Strong, gusty winds over a large area can cause a large wave called a storm surge. Tides are the rise and fall of ocean water caused by the pull of gravity between Earth, the moon, and the sun. Surface currents are caused by the blowing of steady winds. Deep ocean currents are caused by differences in saltiness or water temperature. Lesson 3: Many of the features found on dry land also are found on the floors of Earth’s oceans. In the shore zone, a continent slopes beneath the water’s surface. This area of the ocean supplies humans with many valuable products. Far away from the shore zone, a long mountain ridge crosses the ocean floor. Other features of the ocean floor include vast abyssal plains and deep ocean trenches. The movement of Earth’s plates forms many of these features. Plate movement also causes the formation of new ocean floor and the destruction of old ocean floor.
