2011 Churches Committee Board Report The JASNA Churches Committee received only one new proposal for consideration this year from an Austen-related Church, which reflects the cyclical nature of grant applications from the Churches. The St Peter and St Paul Church in Tonbridge, Kent, submitted a proposal for cleaning and restoration of an 1820 Richard Dodd painting of the Church as it looked during Jane Austen’s lifetime. Since it was received late, the Committee recommends this proposal be re-submitted in 2012 for consideration next year using the recommended grant application. Recommendations for Board Consideration: 1. St. Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, London: Award 1,000 pounds ($1540) Major renovation of the gallery and upstairs area of the Church to become “The Actors’ Church” and enable hosting of theatrical and concert performances. Overall estimate is 60,000 pounds. Accrued $500 in 2010 toward the 1,000 pounds needed for a pew in the gallery with a plaque acknowledging JASNA. 2. Implement grant application template for Austen-related Churches submissions in 2012. (Sample included at the end of this report.) Include in letters to be sent in the fall of 2011 announcing 2012 process/schedule to the Churches. 3. Upcoming JASNA News article on the work of the Churches Committee and the supported projects in Austen-related Churches over the time since last done in the Summer 2001 issue. 4. Create a webpage on jasna.org that highlights JASNA’s support for Austen-related Churches and the work of the Committee. This year we reviewed the history of the committee, developed our ideas for more consistency in our process, discussed ways to increase awareness of JASNA’s support for Austen-related Churches, and formulated the 2011 grant recommendation. Lynn Sherick and Janet Johnson worked to reconcile the history of JASNA donations to the Churches. We have traced the discrepancies in the records. Reconciled history will be used in documenting JASNA support of Austen-related Churches. To aid in the evaluation of submissions from the Churches a grant application template was developed to bring consistency to submissions to the Committee. Retired Rev’d Canon Michael Kenning, Steventon, reviewed and advised us on the draft application template to assure compatibility for the Churches. Submissions will continue to be assessed based on these criteria: 1) tier of the church as defined in JASNA Summer 2001 article, 2) the history of JASNA support to the Church, 3) impact on fostering the appreciation of Jane’s work, life, and her genius, 4) potential to assist in the literary focus of JASNA, and 5) the indirect impact on the study of Jane or on JASNA. The Committee deeply appreciates the generosity of the membership and believes the recent JASNA News articles have increased awareness of the Churches projects. We 2/16/2016 2011 Churches Committee Board Report recommend this be continued with a future JASNA News article focused on JASNA’s support for the Austen-related Churches and a webpage on jasna.org describing this support by JASNA. We will explore the possibility of a flyer in future AGM bags or posters in the AGM Emporium, but prefer JASNA News coverage to all members. Additional discussion included: fundraising by the Committee, which will be an annual agenda item; collaboration with the JASNA-Canada Board on member donations for Austen-related Churches; referral of all non-Church related submissions to the JASNA President, the possibility of Irene Collins as honorary member of the Committee, and developing a script for use by Churches Committee members if visiting an Austen-related Church. I deeply appreciate the Churches Committee members, Viki Barie, Linda Fritz, and Elizabeth Jenkins-Joffe, for their dedication and support. We met via Skype conference call and appreciated Iris Lutz joining us in our discussions.
