Project Read Dec. 3-7
Monday---Unit 15 Lesson 3 Skill: Closed Syllables
Class will review steps for dividing words into syllables with the following
activities:
1. Class will review the following steps for dividing a VCCV word into
syllables: underline talking vowels and mark them with a V
underneath, make a swoop underneath to connect V to V, bring down
C’s for consonants in between the vowels, and divide the word into
syllables between the 2 consonants.
2. Teacher will place worksheet 15-21 under the document camera and
class will review the steps for dividing the word admit into syllables
and then read word and sentence. Class will do the same for words on
worksheets 15-23, 15-24.
Class will also review Closed Syllables by discussing again worksheet 1527. These words contain closed syllables because the talking vowels are
closed in on the end by consonants. That is why these talking vowels are
short vowels. Note the arrow underneath the talking vowel to the end of the
word to show that the vowels are closed in on the end by consonants and
note the short vowel diacritical mark over the short vowels in the words.
Lesson 3: Teacher will display the word trumpet, worksheet 15-31 and ask
students what kind of word this is? Elephant word. How many talking
vowels in this word? 2 How many syllables in this word? 2 Why? A word
has as many parts (syllables) as it has talking vowels.
Teacher will ask students to divide the word trumpet together by following
the steps above to divide a VCCV word into syllables. Then teacher will ask
students to check the vowel in each syllable. Is it closed in at the end of the
syllable by a consonant? Mark the vowel with diacritical mark over top of
each talking vowel. Read the word a syllable at a time. Read the sentence
also with the word trumpet.
With teacher guidance, students will divide and read the words on worksheet
15-35, 15-36. Students will take this sheet home to discuss for homework.
Teacher will also place the story, “Justin’s Log Cabin under the document
camera. Students will practice reading the story. This story will be sent
home for reading homework.
Tuesday---Unit 15 Syllables Review
Class will review how to divide words into syllables by looking again at
worksheets 15-21, 15-23, 15-24.
Class will discuss the steps for dividing words into syllables: 1. Underline
talking vowels and mark them with a V underneath. 2. Make a swoop
underneath everything from V to V. 3. Bring down C’s for your consonants
between the 2 vowels. 4. Divide a VCCV word into syllables between the 2
consonants. 5. Read each word a syllable at a time and also sentences given
for word meaning.
Class will review closed syllables with worksheet 15-27, discussing again
that you find your talking vowel and underline with a line under your talking
vowel to the end of the word, then note if the vowel is closed in on the end
by consonants, if it is then that makes that vowel a short vowel, note the
short vowel diacritical mark over each word. After talking about these rules
with each word, read each word also on the worksheet.
Class will review the steps for dividing words into syllables and also placing
diacritical marks over each talking vowel with words on worksheets 15-31,
15-35, 15-36. The short vowel diacritical mark has been placed over each
talking vowel because each talking vowel is closed in on the end in each
syllable by consonants. Class will discuss this rule with each word and also
read words by reading one syllable at a time.
Teacher will place the story, “Justin’s Log Cabin” under the document
camera. Class will read and discuss the story. Then students will complete a
short comprehension quiz over the story, with the teacher leaving the story
under the document camera during the quiz. After students have completed
the quiz, teacher will take up the quizzes and students will discuss what
answers that they should have marked on the quiz.
