Lesson Plan Title: Verbs – First Grade Concept/Topic to Teach: Action Verbs Standards Addressed: Using verbs to show action (Alabama Language Course of Study, 2007). Specific Objectives: The students will identify words that express action. The students will design a PowerPoint using Microsoft 2003 and clipart . The students will have until 29 April 2011 to complete due to the limited number of computers in the classroom. Required Material: Materials for this activity will be the computer, writing journal, “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed”, by Eileen Christelow, pencil, Microsoft 2003 PowerPoint, and clipart. Anticipatory Set (Lead-in): We will review the previous lessons on nouns and adjectives. I will tell the students that we will be identifying the action verbs in sentences. I will tell them that an action verb is something they can do. We will name words that tell something they can do. Then I will read the book, “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed”, by Eileen Christelow to the students. They will be listening for words in the book that tell something they can do. Step-by-Step Procedures for Teaching the Lesson: We will discuss the title of the story. We will identify the adjectives and the nouns in the title. Then, I will explain to the students that a complete sentence contains a noun and a verb. We will discuss there are different types of verbs, but this week we are focusing on action verbs. I will tell them to listen for words in the story that are “doing” words. When they hear a doing word, I want them to raise their hand. When I finish reading the story, I will list some of words on the board from the story. I will divide students into groups of twos and they will write action words in their writing journal. The students will choose five action words and make a PowerPoint inserting clipart to match the action verb. Guided Practicing/ Monitoring: After conferencing with their partner, the students will show me their action verbs they will use to make their individual PowerPoint. Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): We will come back to a whole group setting. We discuss the action words. Assessment Based on Objectives: The students should have a slide titled verbs with the definition. The students must use five action words. To receive a grade of 80% the student must name five action verbs. To receive mastery, the students will have five or more action words and the clipart. Adaptations (For Students with Special Needs): According to their disability and IEP, they will make a PowerPoint with four words. Extensions (For Advanced Students): The students will build a PowerPoint using the action verb in a sentence and highlighting the word. Possible Connections Other Subjects: This lesson can be a math lesson graphing the vowels in the words. Reflections: The students enjoy making PowerPoints. The idea of adding clipart was challenging especially reducing the size, but the students enjoyed helping each other making the pictures fit on the slide. Thanks to the students who remembered using these tools in Easy Tech was a relief to me. However, Microsoft 2003 does not have much clipart as Microsoft 2007 which was a challenge to some of the students which caused them to change some words. Overall it was a good project and the objectives were met.
