The Swedish Taxonomy Initiative´s Research School in Systematics
(STIRS) announces a PhD course in
Marine Meiofauna
Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory September 6 – 15, 2007
The course aims to give the students a general knowledge of the biotic and abiotic
factors forming meiofauna communities, and specialised knowledge about common
meiofauna taxa. It will combine lectures with practical sessions, including species
identification exercises.
The course is co-ordinated with an international systematic workshop gathering a
number of leading taxonomists covering a wide range of phyla.
Target group: PhD students with a systematic background and interest in marine
fauna.
Working language: English/Scandinavian
Course credits: 5 ECTS
Fee: Students pay for travel to/from marine station and food during the course.
Accomodation and other costs are covered by the organizers.
Registration: Registrations, which should be accompanied by a short CV (indicating
the nature and stage of your research project) can be sent till August 1. Priority will be
given to those PhD-students enrolled in the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative´s Research
School if the maximum numbers of course participants is exceeded by the number of
registrations. The course organisers will inform you by August 6 whether you can
attend the course.

Practicals
The course starts after lunch Thursday September 6 and ends at Saturday morning
September 15. The organizers pays the expenses for accomodation, but individual
students have to pay for food and travel to and from the Tjärnö Marine Biological
Laboratory. Shared (two persons) accomodation in rooms with own toilet/shower.
Students pay SEK 120 per day for full meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

How to get there
By train/bus
From Goteborg/Uddevalla – please see www.vasttrafik.se for timetables. We suggest
the train that leaves Göteborg at 08:00 (please check) which has a bus connection with
the island of Tjärnö where the laboratory is situated. If you cannot take this
connection, please let the organizers know so that we can arrange with transportation
from Strömstad.
By car
From Göteborg
Drive E6 north towards Oslo. After about 150 km turn left on road
number 176, at the signpost ”Strömstad 12”. After 6 km turn left, at the signpost
”Tjärnö 7”. After 8 km, when passed the islands of Daftö and Öddö and Tjärnö
church, is TMBL located to the right before the bridge to Saltö, at the signpost
”Marinbiologiskt laboratorium”. Park on the left hand side of the road.
From Oslo
Drive E6 south towards Göteborg. After about 150 km turn right, at a
traffic light, towards Strömstad. After 3 km, at another traffic light, turn left. In the
end of this road, after 2 km, turn left. Follow this road 4 km, turn right at the signpost
”Tjärnö 7”. After 8 km, when passed the islands of Daftö and Öddö and Tjärnö
church, is TMBL located to the right before the bridge to Saltö, at the signpost
”Marinbiologiskt laboratorium”. Park on the left hand side of the road.
