Maz Oxford Nuffield (MON) Pin Infection Maz Oxford Nuffield (MON) Pin Grading System © Labelling System © MINOR Grades of Pin Infection (1-3) Grade 1 (Reaction not infection) Grade 2 (Clinical Suspicion of infection) Grade 3 (Definite Signs of Infection) MAJOR Grades of Pin Infection (4- 6) Signs & Symptoms Treatment Slight redness +/slight discharge Increase local pin care & observe site Increasing redness +/- soft tissue tenderness +/- discharge of serous / purulent fluid. Pt still able to mobilise with analgesia. Increase local pin care Intensive redness +/- cellulitis +/discharge of serous / purulent fluid + swelling + pyrexia. Patient unable to mobilise on analgesia. All Major Grades of Pin Infection the Patient must be admitted. Swab site for Culture & sensitivities. Immediately start oral antistaphylococcal antibiotic. Check for periosteal reaction / loosening along pin. Intensive local pin care. Limb elevation. Short course IV antibiotic.
