THE BUZZ (54) Four more initiatives from Methodist churches. Please use the contacts if you’d like to know more. WORSHIP – next Advent? From Darley Abbey, Derby Derwent Mission circuit. We put tables in the church with tools and materials for making Christingles, and chairs all around. Everyone made their own, and helped each other if needed. The worship leader explained the meaning of each element of the Christingle in turn, then we made that element and sang an appropriate carol. We finished by turning out the lights and lighting the candles. It was easy to prepare, and was an enjoyable and safe way for all ages to share in the service. We (Methodists and others) opened a shop – called ‘The Welcome’. It began with second-hand clothes and a drop-in, but has become much more. It’s recently expanded as a church plant, with courses for basic skills in conjunction with Macclesfield College. We meet 20 – 25% of the population on a weekly basis. With circuit support there’s a lay worker, cook and youth worker. They shared the Peace, came to the communion table and received a blessing and brought a delicious 'Noah's pudding' for everyone to eat after the service. This is a delicacy made with beans, barley, chickpeas, fruit and walnuts and is traditionally shared with family and friends. We ended with a reading and prayer from both Christian and Muslim traditions. From Central, Letchworth, North Herts We ran a Sleepover last summer for those aged 8 – 14, under the title Summer Celebrations. 22 young people and 7 adults took part. We began at 6pm on Saturday with a supper, then music, drama, creative workshop and puppet work – plus a tuck shop! We prepared items for the Sunday morning service, which included all the young people. It was a great success and we’re doing it again this year. Phone contact: Rev.
