Sexual Harassment: Help and Important Information Who do I contact if I think I have been sexual harassed here at GRCC? The college responds to claims of sexual harassment with seriousness and professionalism. To discuss an incident of student-to-student harassment or faculty/staff-student harassment contact the Dean of Students at 234-3925. How does GRCC define “sexual harassment?” The definition of sexual harassment is discussed in the Sexual Harassment Policy on pages 2, 3, and 4. The definition is also listed in the Student Conduct Code <link this to the Student Code of Conduct.> and reads as follows: Sexual Harassment: Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for favors, and/or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when: a) Such conduct has the purpose or effect of interfering with an individual’s work or academic performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive employment or academic environment. b) Submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly as a term or condition of an individual’s employment or status in a College activity, or c) Submission to, or rejection of, such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment or decisions affecting such individual’s employment or status in a College activity. What process does the college use to respond to incidents of sexual harassment? In order to take appropriate corrective action, the College must be aware of harassment or related retaliation. 1. Students should first report to the Dean of Student Affairs. 2. The Dean will contact a representative from Human Resources (Labor Relations Office) who will investigate the complaint in as discreet and confidential a manner as possible. 3. Within fifteen (15) working days, the facts will be put in writing and submitted to the Labor Relations Office. 4. Within ten (10) working, the Labor Relations Office will initiate an investigation of the complaint. 5. If substantial evidence supports a finding of harassment, the Executive Director of Labor Relations shall take appropriate, corrective action or disciplinary action. Action taken by the College may include (but will not be limited to), counseling, warning, transfer, demotion, or termination or other appropriate disciplinary action as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct <link this to the Student Code of Conduct.> The written report of the action taken shall then be placed in the personnel record of the employee or student file. 6. The complainant and/or the accused may appeal the decision, in writing, stating the reasons for the appeal within ten (10) working days after receiving the decision. The college understands the seriousness of sexual harassment and the importance of assisting victims. Many areas of the college campus work together to ensure a timely, professional response. Human Resources created a comprehensive response called the “Ethics Monitoring System.” This system is set up to provide a number of ways for people to report ethics violations.
